The United States Ambassador to Botswana, Howard Van Vranken, has proved that while he is measured and diplomatic in his public remarks,he does not hesitate to defend Washington's policies and partnership with Botswana when called upon to do so. AI voice was being used for commentary on Brazilian music. It appears that they are using an AI platform made by Vignon. (WORIG 6/16) Brazil's national public broadcaster has announced an extended reduced operating schedule for its Radio Nacional da Amazonia shortwave service. The station's transmission site is northwest of Brasilia, within Rodeador Park in the Federal District. It is heard on two frequencies: 11780 kHz and 6180 kHz. Due to technical problems and energy costs, the service will have reduced operating hours through at least the end of the year, EBC Radio Manager Manoel Caetano told Paul Walker, a long-time shortwave observer. The service's transmitters are ageing. According to Paulk Walker, Radio Nacional da Amazonia uses transmitters that are approximately 50years old. Africa Nr. 1, located in Moyabi, Gabon, was once the most powerful short- wave broadcasting station inAfrica. Initially, France provided some of the funding, but later, Libya under the Gaddafi regime took over the funding and operation. However, with the fall of the Gaddafi regime in the Libyan coup in 2011,funding ceased, and the broadcasting station and transmission facility ceased operations in May 2013. Libya still formally holds private ownership. The Gabonese government aimed to acquire management rights of Africa Nr.1 as part of its broadcasting modernization efforts and had been negotiating with Libya. On May 12, 2026, in the capital Libreville, an agreement was reached to transfer ownership of the station to Gabon. However,significant renovations to the Moyabi transmission facility and the Libreville studios will be necessary to adapt to the digital age,and attracting new technical and commercial partners will be a challenge. Cudi FM, Kobani FM, Rojava FM ab 2012/2013) - nicht mehr die klassischen "ge- heimen Hoehlen-Sender" der 60er-80er Generation, sondern offener im Kon- text der Autonomie. Fruehere / parallele kurdische Sendungen kamen auch aus Mahabad (1946, Republik Kurdistan), Yerevan/Eriwan (Sowjet-Armenien ab 1955, kulturell sehr einflussreich), Kairo, Bagdad (offizielle kurdische Sektionen) oder ueber auslaendische Relais. Warum viele Details bis heute unklar bleiben ? Die Sender waren bewusst clandestin, niedrig-leistungsmaessig, haeufig in Hoehlen oder schwer zugaenglichen Bergtaelern untergebracht und wurden bei Gefahr schnell verlegt. Irakische und iranische Streitkraefte stoerten und bombardierten sie gezielt. Zeitgenoessische DX-Berichte (Kurzwellen- sammler) notierten oft nur Frequenzen und ungefaehre Zeiten, selten prae- zise Standorte. Viele Angaben stammen aus spaeteren Erinnerungen von Beteiligten (z.B. Amini, Barzani-Umfeld) oder lokalen Geschichtsprojekten. {oder den Clandestine Hobbyisten, DSWCI Tropenband Nutzer Berichte,ed.} Die im German ADDX Kurier 7-26 genannten Orte (Salah-Addin-Erbil-Gebirge, Shinawa, Keli Sershaxan, Kelekokey Sere, Shexan, Sulaymaniyah, Rojava Cizire) decken sich gut mit den dokumentierten historischen Standorten; besonders Shinawa/Sardeman und Keli Sershaxan/Shexan sind die am besten belegten "Hoehlen-Sender" der klassischen Phase. It seems uncertain because SNRT, its new owner, is refusing to comment,but the transmitter's power has been reduced on 171 kHz. The history of this established radio station is quite curious. It was on 28 Mar 1978, during a visit to France by Hassan II, that the decision was made to create a Franco-Moroccan commercial radio station, and the project management was entrusted to the French company SOFIRAD. The Franco-Moroccan agreement establishing this radio station, as well as its specifications, remained confidential, and its legal status remained unclear because the documents were never published in the Official Bulle- tin. Radio Mediterranee Internationale Medi1 was launched in 1980 and was 25.5% owned by the Moroccan Bank for Foreign Trade, 25.5% by the Omnium Nord Africain group, and 49% by France. The French stake was held through the Compagnie Internationale de Radio et Television (CIRT), whose parent com- pany was SOFIRAD, which belonged to the French state. From the outset, France (which held only a minority stake) guaranteed that this radio station would never become part of the French public broadcast- ing holding company, Audiovisuel exterieur de la France. A state subsidy (in the range of 1 to 2 million euros) was paid to Medi 1 for about 20 years. However,this subsidy was insufficient to achieve operational balance. Sub- sequently, the strong growth of the Moroccan advertising market and the de facto exclusivity enjoyed by Medi 1 improved its results: profits reached 1.4 million francs in 1994. The station took advantage of this to invest in and modernize its facili- ties in order to increase its audience in Algeria and Tunisia via longwave broadcasting. Medie 1 was independent of France, but for 30 years, the CEO was Pierre Casalta: a former journalist with Radio Monte Carlo and close to Sofirad. From 1991, CIRT, representing Sofirad, was responsible for re- cruiting French journalists and making them available to Medi1. A subsidy of 7 million francs from the French government covered personnel costs. Following France's withdrawal, Medi1 became a private, commercial company. French and Moroccan partners, including banks and large corporations, were represented on the board of directors. In recent years, the Moroccan government's desire to create a public broadcasting sector, including the acquisition of 86.3% of Medi1 radio by the National Broadcasting and Tele- vision Company (SNRT), has brought this operation to fruition. It is impossible to have a clear vision of the future of longwave radio in Morocco, especially since SNRT has ceased broadcasting from its Azila transmitter. Medi_1 covers Morocco on FM. Longwave radio covers the greater Maghreb re- gion (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, and part of Libya), as well as the Mediterranean coast (Spain, France, and Italy). Maintaining the Nador transmitter represents a significant financial burden. The antennas underwent major upgrades in 2009 at a cost of €30 million, 50% of which was funded by the Moroccan government. This will be a fascinating time to listen to MW and lower SW bands to see what can be heard. In the UK the eclipse starts around 1815 BST {17.15 UT}, its peaks around 19.15 and ends around 20.00 BST {19.00 UT}. The event is sponsored by the RSGB's Propagation Studies Committee. In the video the RSGB suggests monitoring Algeria on 531, 981 and 1550 kHz & Morocco on 171 LW. It is suggested that listeners in the south of England also monitor BBC Radio Scotland on 810 kHz. At 1830BST on the Fri- day of the editorial weekend, none were audible. The test is to see whether temporary conditions of darkness starting from 1819 clock time on 12th August make them audible?
