The air around the building is full of what appears to be Tibetan prayer flags. Where could this building be located ? Kashi is well into Moslem country, so can be excluded. So far no 500 kW SW txs are known to be in use in Tibet. Could this be a part of the 100 kW tx komplex (for local sces) outside Lhasa ? (Olle Alm-SWE, BC-DX Apr 3, 2004 year) Qiqihar SW site ? It says that in April 2003 a rotary antenna support (?) with a total height of about 90 meters was delivered by Thales Mannheim Germany firm for the project TCA Qiqihar China. Carl Stahl delivered 12-000 meters of copper wire to the project. Obvious- ly this is a SW project and if Qiqihar is the site name and not just a codeword, Qiqihar in the far northeast of China is one of the other sites being built by Thales. I think an unspecified site in the far north was mentioned by Thales some time ago. But why would they build a site at that location ? The note was found at: (picked up from Google) The webpage also shows an unnamed coastal site with a three tower MW array. {likely Dongfang Island China foreign MW bcast center to Vietnam, ed. } (Olle Alm-SWE, BC-DX Apr 3, 2004 year) ... or an ALLISS system. In the case of Thales it should be of course a quite safe assumption that this 90 metres high system is indeed an ALLISS. (Kai Ludwig-D, BC-DX Apr 3, 2004 year) Re China - the TCA Qiqihar site does seem unusual in that there would seem to be better sites available much further south. Unless, of course, it is designed for one hop coverage into adjacent areas of Russia, Mongolia etc. {sic, for China mainland jamming in use now, ed.} and maybe more distant areas as Wolfie suggests. Voice of Malayan Revolution/Voice of Malayan Democracy. The correct name of the original party was the Communist Party of Malaya. The CPM did not initially recognise the division of MLA and SNG into separate states in 1965 and kept the name it had used since the time of the British Empire, referring to both territories. The CPM later split with the second group calling itself the Malaysian Communist Party. However this second party also split. I will check my records on this later to see which group bc Voice of the People of Malaysia. Also according to the writer Bertil Lintner "During the 1970s, S The Communist Party of Malaya's Suara Revolusi Malaya ("Voice of the Malayan Revolution") bc from Hengyang* south of Changsha in Hunan province", not Kunming as stated, the party had offices in Kunming but the tx was elsewhere. { * I don't believe that location, ed. } Perhaps this was also the case with the CP of Thailand's Voice of the Thai People See (K. Chin Peng, the former Secretary General of the Communist Party of Malaya published his memoirs recently. Chin Peng joined the Communist Party just before World War II. After the war, he assumed the leadership position in the party. It was while he was party leader that the 12 year Emergency was declared in all of Malaya (1948 to 1960). For the communists, this amounted to nothing less than a declaration of war by the "enemy". They were soon forced to operate underground. This not only meant that members have to conduct their activities in a clandestine manner. In the environ- ment of anti-colonial liberation wars at that time, it also meant that the communists were to form armed units which would operate from the jungle against govt targets. Chin Peng devoted almost one chapter of his memoirs to explain the opera- tion of the CPM clandestine radio station, the "Voice of the Malayan Revo- lution" or "Suara Revolusi Malaya". Chin Peng had first sought the help of the North Vietnamese to establish his clandestine station in 1963 as the Communist Party of Thailand was already operating their clandestine sta- tion, the "Voice of the Patriotic Front" from there since 1961. The Vietnamese agreed to the request, but suggested that Chin Peng seek help from either China or East Germany to provide the transmitting equip- ment. Chin Peng explained that as the Sino-Soviet split was already fully manifesting itself at that time, it would be prudent to request help from China. China did not agree to the request initially. It would take six years before the Voice of the Malayan Revolution came on air. Chin Peng says that the station commenced broadcasting from a military area in Hunan province in China in November 1969 using a 20 kW tx on two "wavelengths". Initially, the station broadcasts in Mandarin, Malay and Tamil with three announcers for each section. Chin Peng claims that the announcers were not members of his party and that the broadcasts were well received by communist members and sympathisers in Malaya and SNG (hmm, does this mean he received reception reports?). Later on, the station received requests for broadcasts to be aired in various Chinese dialects. Chin Peng did not say what other dialects were added (I had seen a TV clip from that era which featured a broadcast in Cantonese). At its peak, the station employed 30 announcers. China was at this time in the throes of the Cultural Revolution. Despite this, the station received regular deliveries of Malaysian and SNG news- papers in English and Chinese, as well as "The Times" of London, the Mel- bourne "Age", "The Economist", "Asiaweek", "Time" and "Pacific Affairs". Amazingly, children of station staff continue to receive academic educa- tion even though all other schools were closed in China at this time. The station's broadcast continued without incident until 1980. In that year, Lee Kuan Yew, who was then Prime Minister of SNG had visited Beijing in what many view as a very successful meeting with Chinese leaders. It turned out that Lee had requested Deng Xiaoping to shut down the station as soon as possible. Vietnam had invaded Cambodia a year earlier. The ASEAN countries had supported the participation of the Khmer resistant movement in the United Nations although the US was against it. ASEAN was trying to lobby support from African and South American countries for its Cambodian resolution and it was felt that it would be a difficult task unless the station stopped operating from China. In the circumstance, Chin Peng could only accede to his host's request. 'The Voice of the Malayan Revolution' aired its last broadcast from China on the evening of June 30, 1981. That is not the end of the station. It commenced broadcasts using a mobile tx from the Thai-Malaysian border the following morning using a new call- sign - "Suara Demokrasi", the Voice of Democracy. Suara Demokrasi was to broadcast for another few years. On December 2, 1989, the Communist Party of Malaya signed peace treaties with the Malaysian and Thai govts, ending more than 40 years of rebellion. Under the terms of the treaty, the party would be disbanded and the radio station would cease broadcasts within one month. Chin Peng did not say when the final broadcast was aired. Chin Peng's autobiography "My Side of History", edited by Ian Ward and Norma Miraflor is published by Media Masters in SNG 2003. The German-speaking participants also gave the service in their language the best marks, with 93 of 100 points. Most listeners (61.1 per cent) showed a particular interest in news and information from South Korea, which makes the news (1), and "Kreuz und Quer durch Korea" (2) a program that corresponds with the French-service "Seoul au Jour le Jour" and the Mandarin service's "jinri shou'er". The mailbag program came in third among the German-speaking listeners who gave feedback. K-pop music fared less well among them, while globally, programs focused on K-pop ranks second, only behind news and information. The share of shortwave users among the global audience dropped for the third consecutive year. It had been at 36 per cent among the 2023 respon- dents (i. e. 623 SWLs), at 31.4 per cent in 2024, and is now at 23.8 per cent (551 SWLs). On the other hand, the total number of survey participants rose for the third consecutive year, from 1,730 in 2023 to 2,315 this year 2025. Despite the drop in shortwave listeners, continued use of shortwave has been recommended, because in some regions (including the German-speaking ones), it continues to be the main listener's choice. Among the global participating audience, 46.2 per cent listened to the KBS homepage streaming, and the share of app users was 23.2 per cent. We were pleased to receive messages from radio amateurs hundreds and thousands of kilometers from our trans- mitting center. These include the Krasnodar Krai, Rostov Oblast, Ossetia, Crimea, Stavropol, Finland, and, to our surprise, China.
