My 10 mi-nute remote audio - Here is an interesting YouTube video of his station made several years ago Here is Dave's informative reply to me back in July, 2023, for a report of reception I had at Asilomar State Beach, Calif.: "Thanks for the report. When the ABC ran the station they had 50 kW and I run 200watt so no wonder you find it hard to hear. It covers the south eastern part of Australia ok. Apart from any live input I run an identifi- cation announcement every 10 mins [which I never was able to hear - Ron] that should override the program material. At the moment the in-dents are computer generated and of female voices from the Windows_10 read aloud li-brary, I have them reading in various English accents to make it more interesting so if you record more than 10 mins you should get one. I was in Hawaii in 2016 and heard the ABC on 4835 kHz booming in and 2310 was ok as well. I have seen a trace of my signals on US sdr's but too weak to hear. What would be the best time for you to listen, last night I went off about 1am our time [1500 UT - Ron]. For the last hour or so was playing a dream time program with relaxing electronic music and did make an announcement when I closed. The content of the automatic announcements at the moment is: "This is Shortwave Australia broadcasting to the inland and the islands on 4835 kilocycles day time and evening as well as 2310 kilocycles night time" or words to that effect. Let me know of any more results." Marilyn (Q I presume) responded and told me she was being told REE was 'well heard' in North America and they had many reception reports (those were the words she used ... ) She thought there may be something wrong with 'my equipment'. I responded to THAT saying 'someone is not telling you the full story' and relayed that the North American beamed frequencies have been off the air for MONTHS, I was not the only person noticing that, and it was near im- possible to hear them since the season change.I even sent audio recordings in a separate message to demonstrate how poorly they were received. She replied that she would be 'on vacation for a week' and would follow up when she got back. I then saw a post here that she was moving to a diffe- rent department and there would be new EE host(s) but I've heard nothing directly back from Marilyn or anyone else at REE since then. I tried again this AM to the 'general' email we'll see if I get a response! Thanks for also trying. I'm curious to hear if you get a response! 73 // Ken Zichi". (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx & wor via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Dec 4) SPAIN Spanish public radio will cease all medium wave broadcasts by the end of this year - 2025. Spanish public broadcaster RTVE unexpectedly announced that it will cease all medium wave broadcasts by December 31 of this year (2025). This means that Spanish public radio, Radio Nacional de Espana, will focus on digital broadcasts via DAB+. In addition, RTVE will expand its domestic FM radio network in some cases to avoid degrading the coverage of the na- tional radio network. It is worth noting that Spanish public radio can also be received in all homes and buildings in Spain that receive digital terrestrial television (DTT), throughout Europe and some other continents via satellite in unencrypted format, as well as worldwide and online. According to RTVE, only about 1% of the Spanish population currently listens to medium wave radio broadcasts. RTVE currently uses medium wave transmitters to broadcast two of its five internal programs,Radio Nacional de Espana: the first program, a general programming program known as Radio Nacional, and the fifth program, a news program called Radio 5. Radio Nacional's first program broadcasts on the following medium wave frequencies: 585, 612, 621, 639, 648, 684, 693, 729, 738, 774, 801, 855, 864, and 972 kHz. Radio 5, in turn, broadcasts on medium-wave frequencies of 531, 558, 567, 576, 603, 657, 747, 909, 936, 1017, 1098, 1107, 1125, 1152, 1305, 1314, 1413, and 1503 kHz. RTVE's medium-wave radio network consists of 100 transmitters, and in most cases their output power ranges from 10 to 25 kW. However, the main trans- mitters in this network are much more powerful, but for some time now, the most powerful transmitters of RTVE radio stations have been operating at reduced power. Thus, the power of three 600 kW transmitters (Madrid 585 kHz, Seville 684 kHz, and Barcelona 738 kHz) was recently reduced to 150 kW during the day and 100 kW at night; and the power of three 300 kW transmitters (Tenerife 621 kHz, A Coruna 639 kHz, and Murcia 855 kHz) was reduced to 100 kW during the day and 75 kW at night. RTVE's decision to cease broadcasting on medium wave does not affect com- mercial radio broadcasters in Spain, which will continue to use medium wave. At the same time, in addition to digital broadcasting-via satellite and the internet-but also analog, in this case on shortwave (it does not use mediumwave), RTVE's Spanish radio broadcaster for foreign countries, Radio Exterior de Espana, will continue to operate in Spanish, English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, and Sephardic. In Europe,26 countries have already abandoned mediumwave broadcasting, but in the UK, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) continues to broad- cast on mediumwave (as of 2025 year), while public radio broadcasting in Germany and France ceased mediumwave broadcasting back in 2015. Spain's public broadcaster (state broadcaster) remained one of the last major broadcasters in Europe operating on mediumwave. Daniel sounds like a male, altho a photo caption implied female. Will listen later to podcast. Some discussion of this today in the WOR iog: Bill Tilford-IN-USA: "Online only at this hour, but REE is on in English again as I type (11:07 UT) Escucha RNE Radio Exterior en DIRECTO ??" "I'm also checking REE Madrid online at 1100 UT, with two new hosts: Daniel Rioboo and a lady whose name I cannot fully catch - something like Helva Queyar. English on shortwave scheduled at 2300 UT. Ah - her name is Alba Cuellar -as established by the live stream thumbnail. I assume that's her in the image alongside Marilyn Quintana. I did enjoy the English hour online this morning, and hopefully listeners can catch it on shortwave later today at 2300 UT. I have however commented to Daniel and Alba concerning the presentation style. There was too much background music heard, especially during the interviews, which became a little intrusive and I think that when heard on shortwave it could become a problem for listeners to fully understand. I have pointed out that shortwave reception, even on good days, is usually not the clearest with noise and fading, so it is preferable to not have background music during the interview segments and that perhaps it would be better just to fade in snippets of the music between natural pauses in the conversation. Alan Roe, Teddington, UK" "That's a valid critique, Alan. I find that often the background music is too loud, and a peeve with NPR news programs is that the music fades up too soon, as if we always needed a reminder that the report or interview is about to end. And of course on shortwave it makes hearing and under- standing even harder. Nevertheless, I'm glad the English broadcast is back. I like to use some of the news in my radio magazine "EuroBureau" on our local community FM radio station, I'm not well set up for shortwave listening anymore, I find RNE English at Simon Frech".
