However I have found an intriguing reference to a reference to another AMfrequency in the final paragraph of the following 'About Us' section on the BPA web- site. I suspect the reference to 1449 is actually a typo which should be 1440 ! Radio Kiribati is a public radio station owned and managed by the Broadcasting & Publications Authority (BPA), a Kiribati Government entity. It began operations in October 1954. While the government provides funding for infrastructure, it is run as a commercial station and most of its revenue comes from advertising. It also charges government bodies that wish to have programmes broadcast by the station. Radio Kiribati's programmes cater to the general population of Kiribati; its programming is 75 percent in the local language (I-Gilbertese) and 25 percent in English, all of which is locally produced. The station also relays live sittings of the House of Parliament which are held 4 times a year. Radio Kiribati transmits via a 10 kW AM transmitter located on the Tarawa atoll and operates an FM station (250 Watt) on Kiritimati Island. BPA also relays the ABC Radio through an AM 1449 kHz & FM station FM 89.9 MHz on Tarawa. Radio Kiribati reaches almost all residents of Kiribati. (Jose Ronaldo Xavier, Cabedelo-PB-BRA, hcdx Nov 7) ROMANIA Following the reduction in Radio Romania's broadcasting hours, Radiocom, the broadcasting operator, lowered also the usage of two SW txs in // at Galbeni and Tiganesti centers in August 2023. (RRI Bucharest website B-25 schedule note of Oct 20) Re: Radio Romania International on shortwave. Since August 1, 2023, RRI has been "temporarily" broadcasting on only one frequency (instead of the usual two simultaneously) per target area. However, two frequencies per broadcast continue to be coordinated and pro- grammed into the respective transmitter controls. In Galbeni and Tiganesti, only one of the two transmitters will actually be switched on. In the event of maintenance work or defects in the transmitter or antenna feed connection actually intended for use, the other transmitter will be switched on as a replacement - with the pre-programmed "second frequency". These alternative frequencies can best be found in the HFCC table: RADIOCOM RRI Bucharest in B-25 season. Here the RADIOCOM-Table 'Radio Romania International (B-25)' on shortwave, also all alternate requests / reserve fq channels. Exactly, these observations also correspond precisely to the transmis- sions expected according to the RADIOCOM table: Tiganesti = currently active frequency, readable in the RIGHT RADIOCOM column (TX2, or officially 'Emitator BD-300-2' – the 'B' stands for Directia Radiocomunicatii 'Bucuresti'; the '300' is the transmitter's kW power rating and the '2' is the second shortwave transmitter of this power class in the Bucharest Directorate). Galbeni = currently active frequency. The information can be read in the LEFT RADIOCOM column 'TX2, or officially 'Emitator ID-300-1' – the 'I' stands for Directia Radiocomunicatii 'Iasi' and the '1' for the first 300 kW shortwave transmitter in the Iasi directorate. Here are the four RADIOCOM branches 'directories': Bucharest, Iasi, Cluj, Timisoara. This also explains the official designation of the Saftica* transmitter: 'Emitator BD-100-1' – the first 100 kW shortwave transmitter of the RADIOCOM Bucharest directorate {built up in 1955 as of 50 kW power, partially also used as Komintern communist parties bcasts towards Spain/Latin AM and Portugal in 5 Jan 1955 til 14 de July de 1977 approx. wb. ed.} Tonight ... Broadcasts from Tiganesti, RRI English will resume broadcast- ing as planned on 9570 kHz DRM digital mode towards Europe / London start- ing at 1800 UTC, and from Galbeni on 6030 kHz AM starting at 2130 UTC. RRI English towards NoAM / New York will then resume, for example, on 7250 kHz via Tiganesti starting at 2130 UTC, and on 9510 kHz via Galbeni starting at 0100 UTC. The most interesting information next to smaller Timisoara Sacalaz new MW site of 31 Dec 1978 erecting information, is the special data of [Tiganesti #2] Saftica site of January 1955 already, the specification given surprisingly 1 x 100 kW, and an (older?) 1 x 50 kW transmitter is in use also there. A fact I've been around 14 years back since the first Satellite images came to the knowledge of the audience, and the recognizable two rotatable horizontal log-periodic antennas on the property always represented. LPH Horizontal log-periodic antenna #812, which is revolving antenna type. Two rotatable horizontal log-periodic antennas were placed on the site to the south in the year 2008, when in August 2008 Galbeni, Tiganesti #1, and Saftica sites were equipped with new CONTINENTAL 300 or 100 kW SW units, Made in USA. And also scrapped at [Tiganesti #2] Saftica site the old various longer leg rhombic antennas in direction of Spain/Latin AM and Portugal from days of Clandestine transmissions of "Radio Espana Independiente" by Komintern (&) and as well as Portuguese Communist Party Radio "Radio Portugal Libre" too; in order to clear the area for residential de- velopment on the property. As you yourself have observed, for example, 01.00-03.00 UTC is being broadcast via Tiganesti and Galbeni towards NoAM {in // }. All transmissions from Tiganesti are apparently running as intended via TX2. However, all transmissions from Galbeni are not being received via the TX2 frequencies as announced by RRI, but rather via TX1. It's possible that the Galbeni TX2 is faulty {at present, ed.}. All your observations correspond exactly with the RADIOCOM table: Tiganestii: TX2=ON, TX1=OFF; Galbeni: TX1=ON, TX2=OFF; (Saftica: TX1=ON). You can find these alternative frequencies on the website and on F_Book. If you cannot find RRI broadcasts on the usual frequency, please switch to the corresponding alternative frequency for that program. From 2020 AM radios started being removed from their electric vehicles. Tesla's move makes it the first mainstream auto brand to cut out over-the-air radio entirely. The decision is viewed as a bold one, given the data. According to Edison Research's Share of Ear study, AM/FM radio still accounts for 51% of all incar audio time among Tesla drivers, outpacing podcasts (12%) and ad-free SiriusXM (10%). Even more notably, 74% of all ad-supported listening in Tesla's happens on AM/FM radio. There is cur- rently a campaign in the USA to support legislation that ensures AM radio remains in cars. The NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) have issued PSA (Public Service Announcement) in English and Spanish asking radio listeners to contact their members of Congress urging them to support legislation that ensures AM radio remains in cars." We were very sorry to learn that Gordon Darling, one of the UK's top DXers in the 1970s and 1980s, had passed away in a nursing home in Sussex on 18th October. Gordon joined the World DX Club in August 1969 and was an early member of the British DX Club (BDXC 43), joining in August 1975 when he lived in Scotland. He was soon contributing impressive shortwave and mediumwave logs and QSLs to Communication. Gordon was also a member of ISWL and the Danish Shortwave Clubs Inter- national (DSWCI #678 % ): his photo appeared on the front cover of DSWCI's 'Short Wave News' in February 1981 * by the gates of BBCMS in Caversham. He founded invite-only club UKDXA in July 1980 until the last issue of its newsletter in February 1984. Gordon was a regular at DX meetings in Reading after he had moved south to work at the BBC Monitoring Service (as it was called then) in the World Schedules Section in Caversham Park. Mike Barraclough remembers Gordon contributed a 2-page article to the September 1969 Contact, "Under the Jolly Roger", about land-based pirate radio after Radio Caroline had closed - he was present during one raid on a pirate station. He was a DJ on Radio Classic which used the London Transmitter of Independent Radio but that was in the early 1970s. The article has been posted on the Land Based Pirate Radio of the 70's & 80's Facebook group (21 October). In October 1969 Gordon sent a letter introducing himself to Mailbag in WDXC's Contact saying "I shall not be joining the DX ladder at the moment because my total score is in excess of 600 and I do not think that a newcomer should go immediately to the top of the list" (in the ladder 2 points were awarded for a country, 1 for a station etc). In 1984, Gordon moved overseas to Papua New Guinea to work for their National Broadcaster, before returning to the UK and living in East Sussex.
