Despite everything, the station continues to fulfill its primary purpose - rebroadcasting programs in the medium and shortwave ranges. For many years, the staff and management of the Radio Station have preserved its transmitting equipment. Many of the exhibited units are unique examples of Soviet radio engineering. For example, "Bob" HF transmitters are used only in Noratus, although this type of transmitter was previously in use at many similar facilities in the former USSR. In Noratus, it's not customary to break anything. Even if a transmitter or antenna is out of service for a long time, everything is preserved without any thought of dismantling. I invite you to recall a short video clip filmed this summer.Try immersing yourself virtually in the world of power- ful radio broadcasting. Just 15 years ago, similar facilities were common in the post-Soviet space. Now, there are few places left in the world that maintain Soviet radio broadcasting equipment on such a large scale. Happy anniversary, Armenian miracle! (via Anatoly Klepov-RUS, RUSdx #1365 via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 26) BRAZIL/COLOMBIA LV de tu Conciencia (Colombia) testing on 6010 kHz. Mike Bethge-D, Oct 26) GERMANY / ETHIOPIA TARGET Ethiopia Orders Journalists From Germany's DW Deutsche Welle Bonn-Berlin - To Stop Work. Ethiopia has ordered journalists working for Deutsche Welle (Bonn-Berlin Germany) to stop reporting in the country, the German broadcaster said Friday, the latest move in a broader media crackdown. DW said the Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) ordered nine of its journa- lists to "temporarily" suspend work on Thursday. "We are very concerned about the restriction on our reporting in Ethiopia," DW director general Barbara Massing said in a statement. "We fully expect that our colleagues will be able to resume their work immediately and without restriction." The state-backed broadcaster produces programming in 32 languages, includ- ing Amharic, which is spoken by many in Ethiopia. DW said its staff in Ethiopia had complied with the order to halt journalistic work. But staff in Germany and elsewhere in the world will continue producing DW's Amha- ric-language television and radio programming to serve Ethiopians, the broadcaster said. DW said that its Amharic-language programming reaches millions of Ethiopians, making it the largest foreign broadcaster in th country. According to DW, the EMA's letter did not level any concrete allegations about coverage. It is the latest targeting of reporters ahead of elec- tions, due to be held in June or July 2026. In September, 'Human Rights Watch' (HRW) asked the Ethiopian authorities to "end their harassment of independent journalists". In April, three employees of the Addis Standard, an English-language online daily, were detained for several hours after a police raid on their offices. "The repression against independent media is only increasing," an Ethio- pian journalist in exile for several years told AFP, describing a "terri- fying" climate. According to press freedom group 'Reporters Without Borders' (RSF), eight journalists are currently imprisoned in Ethiopia. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was initially praised for opening up civil space when he came to power in 2018, after nearly three decades of authoritarian rule by the Tigray People's Liberation Front. But rights groups accuse him of quickly reneging on those early promises, especially after the country was plunged into a devastating civil war in 2020. RSF ranked Ethiopia 145th out of 180 countries this year in the group's annual press freedom index, down four places on 2024. RWP Logs from Wheaton, IL state - Oct 22. (Ralph Perry-Wheaton-IL-USA, wor Oct 24) Greetings, Ralph, from California ! We are very similar, in that I also occasionally do check, with the faint hope that perhaps RTM has invested in a new transmitter for the revival of Sarawak FM on 9835kHz. The follow- ing comments are just my personal opinion about 9835 and 11665 kHz, based on decades of monitoring Malaysia. Many years ago, Sarawak FM (9835 kHz) was normally decently heard at Asi- lomar State Beach, whereas Wai FM (11665kHz) was usually fairly poor. Then Sarawak FM went silent (2022 year), never to be heard again, and Wai FM suddenly was being heard with a better signal. To me, it seemed logical to guess that the old 11665 kHz transmitter was permanently retired and re- placed with the better functioning 9835kHz transmitter. This is just ideal conjecture on my part and I have never seen this idea official or unoffi- cially put forth. So it is my belief that Sarawak FM will only return to SW via a new transmitter, which RTM is very unlikely to do, even though they sometimes do work to improve SW operations. (Jan 2024) Anyway, let's keep checking 9835 kHz ! Especially now, as 11665 kHz (Wai FM) is temporarily off the air with technical difficulties. English auf 7285 kHz in Nord-Amerika. Es gibt heute in 2025 Jahr so viele freie Frequenzen oberhalb der 7305 kHz Bandgrenze bis 7500kHz in der UTC Nacht zur Nutzung. (wb df5sx, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 26) ROMANIA / TURKEY Hello dear Rich and Walt, After receiving the RadioCom database from Romania, I was very struck by this: The person processing FQ requests for all-America, South America, and North America at RADIOCOM is actually not allowed to use the 7200 to 7300 kHz band for BC radio use for RRI Bucharest Spanish, French, and English broadcasts during UTC nighttime; in all-America, these belong exclusively to the international radio amateur sector! So the 7220 kHz request should be replaced by 7320 kHz or 7410 kHz chan- nels for final use. This also applies to TRT Turkey Emirler with 7280 kHz use in Spanish, or English on 7285 kHz in America in B-25 season. There are many free frequencies above the 7305 kHz band edge available for use during UTC night. Hello ! On Oct 10th, I had a brief exchange with Russian Service editor Tatyana Zhitnikova about QSL cards. She mentioned the Fico government's plans to close the station. Here's what Tatyana said about the threat of RSI's closure: "We're in a very serious situation at RSI. We're considering closing our radio station as part of a public finance consolidation effort. We're awaiting a management decision ... We're currently sending out paper cards very rarely. Cards for 2025 have been printed, but in small batches. We no longer have a technical department; we, the editors, are sending out the cards ourselves. Thank you for your reception reports; they're very important to us, as they allow us to understand how our signal is being received in your re- gion, particularly in Saratov. Our broadcasting situation is challenging, and we thank all our listeners for their support." P.S. I also asked Tatiana if the station's employees were planning to create a petition to management and the government, with listeners' sig- natures, to preserve the station's broadcasts. She didn't respond to this question. However, I think the Russian service also needs support. Faced with this illegal activity, the station immediately filed a complaint, handing over the corresponding evidence to the Taipei Police and the Investigation Agency of the Ministry of Justice, request- ing a formal investigation. At the same time, the broadcaster warned the competent authorities that, due to its status as a national critical infrastructure, the incident could pose a national security risk. Collaboration with the authorities and preliminary findings. After actively collaborating with the police and judicial forces, and thanks to the assistance of the computer security team of the station, the evidence collected so far indicates that the incident was perpetrated by a small group of dishonest employees in collusion with staff of an external company. These people planned and executed the sabotage, deli- berately causing the alteration of the normal functioning of the station's website. Disciplinary action and legal action. The employees involved in the case have been suspended from their duties pending the outcome of the investigation. In addition, on 13 October, the station, represented by its lawyers, formally filed a complaint with the District Attorney's Office. Based on materials from Richard Cummings' 2016 archival blog, "Cold War Radio" (CIA clandestine radio broadcasts from Greece during the early Cold War). The blog contains a single link to a possible source - a website with declassified US documents (blocked in Russia). Near Athens, with permission from the Greek government, the US Central Intelligence Agency established a communications complex, codenamed WEMCA, to conduct psychological warfare against countries "behind the Iron Curtain." The radio broadcasting organization, which broadcast in up to nine languages, was known by the cryptonom PYREX. The shortwave trans- mission complex broadcast "black" (underground) radio stations to Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, and the Soviet Union. The blog provides a particularly detailed account of the Ukrainian- language radio station "Novaya Ukraina," which broadcast from there from 1955 to 1959. In CIA Special Services documents, this project was code- named RANTER. The project's primary objectives were to incite resentment, anger, and distrust of the Soviet regime, and to foster nationalism and underground resistance movements, including the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Another clandestine radio station broadcasting in Russian from the WEMCA broadcasting complex was "Nasha Rossiya." It broadcast from 1954 to Octo- ber 1959. The CIA codenamed this project AECROAK, but the blog provides no information about its goals or objectives. Information about this broad- cast is inconsistent in places. For example, the broadcast volume is stated as 760-784 hours per month, which exceeds the number of hours even with 24-hour broadcasting. Broadcasts for "Novaya Ukraina" and "Nasha Rossiya" were pre-recorded in the United States, while those for "Nasha Rossiya" were partially produc- ed in Greece. Both radio stations were subject to jamming in the USSR. More detailed materials can be found in the English-language blog. Dear Colleagues: I am sending you the item below which will appear in the November 2 edi- tion of our DX program 'Wavescan' regarding the possible disappearance of 'Radio Slovakia International' as soon as December 31st of this year, and an appeal to listeners to send letters of support. Due to the urgency of the matter, I am sending this to you in advance of the broadcast. Best regards, Jeff Jeff White, General Manager WRMI Radio Miami International 10400 NW 240th Street Okeechobee, Florida 34972 USA NoAM Tel +1-305-559-9764 (via Radio Miami International Oct 22) From Wavescan, November 2, 2025: Radio Slovakia International has broadcast programs on shortwave since the founding of the Slovak Republic in 1993. It ended shortwave broadcasts from its own transmitters in Slovakia in 2011 year, but it has continued broadcasting on shortwave via WRMI in Florida USA and Shortwave Service in Germany to this day. However, Ladislava Hudzovicova of Radio Slovakia International has sent us some alarming news. She says: "We are writing to you asking for a great favor. We ask for your support, a testament to the value of our broadcasts and our work. The existence of Radio Slovakia International is threatened. We attach an open letter signed by the entire RSI editorial team. We thank you in advance for your support." It appears that Radio Slovakia International could be shut down as soon as December 31st of this year. That's next month. In a moment, I'll give you the email addresses where you can send letters of support for Radio Slovakia International. But first, I'll read you the open letter signed by the RSI employees. It reads: "We, the members of Radio Slovakia International, were surprised by the news that,as part of the consolidation and preparation of the Slovak Tele- vision and Radio budget for next year, when we will commemorate the cente- nary of broadcasting in Slovakia, the management intends to substantially limit or even terminate Radio Slovakia International (RSI) broadcasts. "The implementation of such a measure would conflict with Article 5, para- graph 1, letters p) and e) of Act No. 157/2024 on Slovak Television and Radio, which defines the broadcasting of programs of public interest abroad and programs aimed at Slovaks living abroad as the main activities of a public broadcaster. With the adoption of this decision, listeners would lose their only source of objective information about the Slovak Republic. With the added fact that we would be the only country in the Visegrad Group (V4) to stop broadcasting abroad in this way, in various languages of the world. "Broadcasting abroad began in Czechoslovakia in the autumn of 1936 through 'Radiojournal', the forerunner of Czechoslovak Radio. The idea of reaching out to the world arose within the context of a difficult geopolitical si- tuation that continues today. After the creation of the independent Slovak Republic, Slovak Radio continued this tradition by establishing an inde- pendent broadcasting station, RSI, which produces and distributes programs in English, French, German, Russian, and Spanish, in addition to broad- casts in Slovak for Slovaks living abroad. "This year, we conducted a survey among listeners of our broadcasts, to which respondents from more than seventy countries in Europe, Australia Asia, North America, and South America responded. The survey results con- firmed the real interest of listeners, who also contact us regularly by letter, email, and in person. RSI's mission and work—the objective presen- tation of Slovakia abroad—aligns with the Slovak government's programmatic strategy of pursuing a "four-point policy". The content of broadcasts abroad cannot be replaced by a translation of Radio˛urnal coverage for Slovak listeners, nor by artificial intelligence, because the context and background must be explained to the foreign listener. "As RSI editors, we systematically select topics, provide qualified trans- lations, produce reports, edit material, and moderate programs. The result of our work is not only professional quality translations but, above all, creatively original texts, interviews, objective news, and reports. We support tourism and develop public diplomacy by maintaining long-term, intensive relations with foreign embassies present in Slovakia and with Slovak embassies abroad. We also cooperate with foreign cultural institu- tions in Slovakia, with which we successfully implement joint projects. "The uniqueness of RSI's broadcasts also lies in the fact that, since the creation of the independent Slovak Republic, it has been the only Slovak media outlet that has continuously covered the lives of Slovaks living abroad. It connects our country with our compatriots around the world and with each other. We highlight the life, culture, social activities, and history of Slovaks abroad. We look for Slovak personalities who have had a significant impact in different parts of the world. We also introduce Slovakia to foreigners who are learning Slovak and, thanks to our broad- casts, have the opportunity to get to know our country. "We are aware of the need for the state's economic consolidation and are willing to seek, together with the STVR leadership, opportunities for per- sonnel and financial savings in the activities of the Slovak Radio. A sub- stantial reduction in the Slovak Radio's foreign broadcasting activities would significantly weaken the daily flow of objective and accurate infor- mation to a wide foreign audience on the socio-political, economic, and cultural life of Slovakia, which has been guaranteed for more than three decades solely by the Slovak Radio's public broadcasting service. "In Bratislava, 13. Oct. 2025. The team of Radio Slovakia International" So that was the open letter from Radio Slovakia International employees to Slovak Radio management. And again, RSI is urging its listeners around the world to send letters of support to the management, in an effort to stop plans to dismantle the station, and to encourage management to continue RSI's broadcasts. They are asking for your letters of support to be sent to three email addresses. You could send one message to all three addres- ses. And here are the email addresses: The first one is: The second address is: And the third address is: If you missed any of those addresses, just send us a message and we'll reply with the addresses. Here is the Amazon blurb: "Returning once again to Viet Nam, where more than thirty years previously they had been correspondents during the Vietnam War, Iain Finlay and Trish Clark take up the job of coaching a team of young Vietnamese people at the Voice of Vietnam radio network in Hanoi. Here, Iain and Trish describe their experiences and their encounters with the New VietNam. They describe with warmth and humor the various people they work with, and the persona- lities they meet and get to know in and around the small courtyard where they live. Season B25: October 26, 2025 - March 28, 2026. Many countries are switch- ing to winter time, so broadcast times will change. In the United States, the switch from summer to winter time will occur next week on Sunday, November 2nd [the switch to winter time occurs on the first Sunday in November, and the switch back to summer time on the second Sunday in March]. Over the coming week, there will be changes and additions to shortwave broadcasts due to interference from neighboring radio stations. Which on- line databases will remain up-to-date is also questionable, as these data- bases are compiled by people who, although devoted to radio reception, often have poor health, preventing them from compiling radio station lists for review.
