Presentation on Radio Vltava at Reading radio meeting, Oct 18. Thanks to everyone who came to the Reading DX meeting last Saturday. For those interested in the talk I gave on Radio Vltava, I've posted an article on it: Many thanks to fellow hobbyists Kai Ludwig and Wolfgang Bueschel to their valuable input into my researches into what happened in 1968 ! (Chris Greenway-UK, BrDXC-UK iogroups news Oct 20) Wolfie, Kai, - Many, many thanks for all the input that you provided for my research into Radio Vltava. Your observations were extremely helpful. I gave my talk to the Reading Radio Group yesterday Oct 18, and partici- pants said they found it fascinating. I've written an article based on the talk, which includes some of your input. It gave me another chance to acknowledge your help. See: Thanks again! Chris (Chris Greenway-UK, via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 19) Questions about clandestine station 'RADIO VLTAVA' 1430 kHz via GDR 250 kW station Dresden Wilsdruff site in August 1968 til February 1969. Hello radio friends, My next talk at the Reading International Radio Group (on 18 October) will, as usual, be on a historical subject. This time I've chosen to talk about the not-very-clandestine station Radio Vltava which was active after the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. I'll accompany the talk with an online article for everyone to read. Most articles currently available online about Radio Vltava are either in German or Czech, and I'd like to write one in English. Also, I'd like to base my article on documentary evidence, rather than speculation, and to fact-check as much as I can. For example, I will mention the dubious claim that some of Vltava's transmissions came from Karl-Marx-Stadt but explain that there is no evidence this was the case. On the other hand, there is confirmed documentary evidence that Vltava was transmitted, for a few days at least, via Leipzig-Wiederau 1322 kHz, which usually relayed Radio Moscow towards all-Europe. I have a few questions that I hope someone might be able to help me with: - Radio Vltava's main frequency was 1430 kHz, from the Wilsdruff trans- mitter near Dresden. Before 21 August 1968, 1430 kHz was used by 'Radio Berlin International' - foreign GDR radio station. But which site did RBI 1430 kHz use ? Was it from Halle-Bernburg {small local signal 20 kW radio station, not very effective, ed.} , as suggested by this website or from {true} Berlin-Koepenick (which seems more likely), or from else- where ? - Can anyone point to recordings online of Radio Vltava ? There seems to be very little available. One of the few recordings (but which is now longer available) was misleading as it edited together an announcement from RBI in Czech / Slovak with one from Vltava. One problem with search- ing for recordings is that Radio Vltava is of course the name of one of Czech Radio's current stations. Thanks! Europe. This evening, now that Brasov Bod Romania 153 kHz has reduced their power or even completely signed off for the night, several WebSDRs in southern Europe receive Chaine 1 Bechar site on 153 kHz. I did not even know they were still (or again?) on the air on that frequency. Example: Verification via live stream: Thanks @ Gedas for the great conversation about this topic :) (Sebastian Schlueter, wor Oct 14) Not a good evening as far as LWpropagation but because the QRN was reduced ref the last several weeks several LWBC stations are currently listenable. Bechar Algeria on 153 kHz {S=8 -79dBm signal, heard NoAF typical Sahel drums mx at 21.25 UT on Oct 14, in France SDR unit, ed. received Oct 14} and Chaine3 Tipaza ALG 252 kHz {S=9+20dB signal or -61dBm, ed.} take first place in terms of readability and signal strength. At the time of observa- tion both were playing traditional music. Time standard TDF on Allouis 162 kHz was very strong (as normal) with easy decodes of it digital data stream. BBC-R4 Droitwich, Burghead, Westerglen, on 198 kHz {S=8 signal or -75dBm, ed.} would have been audible if it's signal strength was 10-15 dB stronger. Thus only a carrier approximately 20dB S/N was observed. Nador Morocco on 171 kHz {S=9 signal -71dBm, ed.} was about the same situation but it was a bit stronger as modulation was just audible in/out during QSB up bubbles. Only the slightest sign of a carrier was detected for Radio Poland Solec Kujawski on 225 kHz {S=5 sig- nal or -95dBm, ed.}. DCF77 Mainflingen Germany {S=9 signal or -73dBm, ed.} was coming in nicely all evening, averaging 20dB S/N. (73 Gedas W8BYA, wor Oct 14) LUXEMBOURG 6140 kHz Cote d'Ivoire / Belgium / Luxembourg. Ho- wever, two frequencies per broadcast will continue to be coordinated and programmed into the respective transmitter controls. In Galbeni and Tsiganeshti, only one of the two transmitters will actually be switched on. In the event of maintenance work or defects in the transmitter that was actually intended to be used, the other transmitter will be switched on as a replacement - with the "second frequency" that has already been programmed. These alternative frequencies can best be found in the HFCC table: In Galbeni, all broadcasts have apparently been running on the "other" transmitter for about three days and thus on the other frequencies, e.g., Romanian 1300-1500 UTC temporarily on 17780 kHz instead of, 15340 kHz. So as long as the announced nightly 9740 kHz 0300-0400 UT RRI English towards NoWeAM via Galbeni site is not working, the program will be available on 11620 kHz (or perhaps 17790 kHz). History of Russian-Language Radio Broadcasting. - Germany. Russian-Language Radio Broadcasting in 1940-1945. Based on the book "Anti-Semitic Propaganda in the Occupied Territories of the RSFSR. 1941-1944," Moscow-Rostov-on-Don, 2015; authors D.A. Zhukov, I.I. Kovtun / chapter "Ominous Voices. Radio Propaganda."/ and the article in the publication "Echo of War" No. 3, 2008. "Attention, attention! This is Germany speaking ...," by D.A. Zhukov, M.V. Kozhemyakin (published online by M.V. Kozhemyakin in 2011). The book is based on research into numerous archival documents and Nazi publications of those years, published in the occupied territories of the USSR. It provides information about collaborators in these publications and on Nazi radio-former Soviet journalists, writers, actors, and military personnel - some of whom suffered retribution. For example, Vsevolod Blumenthal-Tamarin, an actor and the son of famous actors, deliberately de- fected to the Nazis and worked in newspapers and on radio, where he paro- died Stalin, broadcast falsified decrees of the Soviet government, deli- vered anti-Soviet jokes and speeches, and was eventually killed by parti- sans. However, many of the collaborators fled with the retreating fascist army, found refuge in the West, where after the war they continued to work in emigre publications and on CIA-controlled radio stations such as Radio Liberation (later Radio Liberty) and Free Russia. Based on the materials presented in the book and article, it is concluded that German radio broadcasting to the USSR began in 1940 and, until 1941 (before the war), was conducted exclusively by "black" (unofficial) radio stations under the control of Goebbels's Propaganda Ministry. Broadcast- ing after Germany's attack on the USSR had two main components: - "White" (official) radio broadcasting was used for broadcasting to the Soviet army and populations in rear areas, as described in the book and article as "35 radio centers with a capacity of up to 150 kW" + 16 front- line mobile radio stations with a capacity of 20 kW each + "black" radio stations; - Local terrestrial radio stations captured by the Nazis were used for broadcasting to populations in occupied territories, but the primary use was made of pre-war wired radio broadcasting networks. Nazi Germany's broadcasting network was the most extensive among the coun- tries of the Hitler coalition. Besides Germany, Italy, Finland, Japan, and Slovakia also broadcast to the USSR during the war. Japan - Russian-language broadcasts from 1942-1945. An Italian weekly, Radio-corriere, published information about Japanese radio broadcasts to Europe in June 1943. All times are local, meaning Central European. Broad- casts were conducted in two blocks. The morning block, from 1020 to 1120, contained 15-minute broadcasts in Japanese, German, Italian, and English (a 10-minute news segment and some music). The night block, from 09:00 PM to 12:30 AM, contained mostly 30-minute broadcasts in English, German, Japanese, Italian, and French. In Russian, this block only featured a 10- minute news segment at 11:50 PM. This may have been only the case during the first months of Russian broad- casting, which began on December 5, 1942. In addition to news, the broad- casts in other languages included some features and music. The night block was broadcast on two transmitters, designated / call signed JVW and JLG2, on frequencies of 7257 kHz and 9505 kHz, respectively. I notified George and he replied that could not see any of that on his new spectrum analyser three hours earlier. (Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, hcdx and wor Oct 9-11) WTWW: George McClintock explains Oct 9 the delay in getting 5085 kHz & 9475 kHz back on the air. An expensive relay needs to be replaced. One was ordered but never shipped. Another one didn't work and blew out. Some problem with a third one, now expecting a fourth one to get back on air by next week. On the other transmitter the spurblobs were caused by dirty contacts, which he cleaned up fixing that, for now. The company has released two models of the 15T phone in Russia. The most unusual feature is offline communication between devices. Without a cellular network or Wi-Fi, just voice. The technology is called Xiaomi Surge T1S and works via a direct line: up to 1.9 km for the Pro version and up to 1.3 km for the basic version. It's hard to imagine using it out- side of deep forest hikes. Details: (via Anatoly Klepov-RUS, RUSdx #1363 via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 12) Subject: Re: Fwd: Xiaomi has turned a smartphone into a walkie-talkie. Xiaimi (meaning "small rice crop") 15T is also advertised in Japan for outdoor use, saying "direct communication within 1.9km". (Takahito Akabayashi-Tokyo-JP, via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 20) Subject: Re: Fwd: Xiaomi has turned a smartphone into a walkie-talkie. Interessant.
