(Ron Howard-Asilomar State Beach (near Monterey-CA), wor via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 3) INDONESIA This month we are proud to bring you some excellent original articles contributed by members. David Foster, long one of the world's foremost Indonesia broadcasting scene experts, brings us into the world of a Radio Pemerintah Daerah station. Remember when these were widely heard on the tropical bands ? There has been speculation about the transmitter locations of new 7205 kHz Pro 3 RRI and 9690 kHz Voice of Indonesia. The Facebook group Pendengar Setia AM/MW & SW di Indonesia says it has the answers. This is a translat- ed compilation of their investigations. 7205 kHz The transmitter is located at Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. In a Sept 14 post there is a video of a rather brutalist-looking 4 storey RRI building with a simple 2 element Yagi antenna on the roof. The video is taken from Jl. Antena II, a graffiti-filled lane at the rear. Next door building is RRI's Education and Training Research and Development Centre which has the address Jl. Dalam Radio Raya 4. This post also includes a photo of the inner workings of the very small transmitter constructed by RRI technicians. The Pro 3 RRI studios are located at Medan Merdeka Barat in Central Jakarta. A post from Mohammad Rohanudin says that the 7205 kHz transmitter has 600 Watts PEP power. It has a solid stage [state?] AM PWM modulation system, the VFO is like a custom-made SSB radio made for BITX USDX, and it uses DDS. Its beam is east through Java to Papua. It turns out that Mr. Rohanudin is not just any listener but is a 2021-26 member of RRI's supervisory board, and from 2016-21 he was RRI's President- Director. He apparently led a team in construction of this transmitter. He has also en- couraged DRM testing on AM and FM. Malik Zinedine points out that from 1945 Kebayoran Baru was used for Voice of Free Indonesia (which lasted for 19 days in 1945 then was rebranded as RRI) and RRI Jakarta SW broadcasts, then used for RRI's AM until 2005 and finally in 2019 for an FM transmitter. 9690 kHz This transmitter is located at Cimanggis, Depok, West Java. In a Sept 21 post there is a photo of a rotatable log periodic dipole array, quite an impressive antenna, used for 9690 kHz. It seems that it is in the same area as the 4755 kHz antenna tower which is variously described as a 30 metre dipole. It's seemingly the second photo in this post. The new and quite stylish Voice of Indonesia building at Cimanggis has the address Jl. Umum No.2 RT.1/RW.1, Cisalak, Kec. Sukmajaya, Depok. In a Sept 20 post there is a photo of the building with an antenna tower partly vi- sible nearby, not clear for which transmitter/frequency. Other RRI build- ings close by are RRI Powerhouse Cimanggis and the RRI Multiplatform Broadcast Centre. Mauno Ritola-FIN at WRTH reported that Voice of Indonesia 9690 kHz is 1 kW although Bryan Clark reporting in World of Radio Sept 19 states that a tip from Mauno said that the power is 400 Watts so maybe 1 kW is nominal. Mauno adds that VOINS on 4755kHz is nominally 10 kW but operating at 3 kW. He says Palangkaraya 3325 kHz is 30 kW (WRTH 2025 shows 40 kW) but it is clearly operating at a tiny fraction of that output. (Rick Barton, Sun City-AZ-USA, Arizona Update wor Oct 8) see AMPEGON publication: The futureproofing of Radio New Zealand's short wave service being beamed into the Pacific has taken the next step with renewal of a thirty-three year old transmitter with a new digital DRM model. RNZ has powered down its oldest 34-year-old shortwave transmitter, for the last time: This system, known as "Transmitter 1", is one of two shortwave transmitters that deliver both analogue and digital radio broadcasts to the Pacific region and is being retired after decades of service. The shutdown is part of the preparation for the installation of a new Swiss-made Ampegon shortwave transmitter at its Rangitaiki site. This project is a milestone for RNZ: For the past 75 years, it has been using shortwave radio to broadcast to the vast Pacific region. Replacing the old transmitter marks a significant step in futureproofing this ser- vice, guaranteeing availability for years into the future. Transmitter 1 was installed just outside of Taupo in 1989, just in time for the Commonweath Games held in Auckland in 1990. Only capable of transmitting in analogue, servicing Transmitter 1 became an increasingly challenging task with many of the parts for the trans- mitter now obsolete and unavailable after more than 30 years. Its replacement, a newest-generation TSW-2100 100kW Ampegon shortwave transmitter capable of switching between both digital DRM and analogue transmission modes, is currently being shipped to New Zealand after being built in Ampegon's factory in Switzerland. To facilitate installation of the new system, Transmitter 1 has been switched off and is being decommis- sioned to make space. Any useful parts will be kept as spares. RNZ's Transmission Engineer Specialist Steve White said the challenge for the switchover is having an existing transmission building that limits available space: "It will take around four weeks to completely dismantle Transmitter 1, which was built into the building so it's not just a case of unplugging it and wheeling it out. We need to isolate the transmitter from the main switchboard as well as drain the fluids that help cool the transmitter before breaking it down into parts." The new Ampegon transmitter will arrive in January 2024 and take an esti- mated six weeks to install, and a further six weeks to commission before user training can begin. It's currently expected the transmitter will be operational from 1 May 2024. Once Transmitter 1 is replaced, RNZ will have two Ampegon transmitters capable of both analogue and digital transmissions, ensuring complete redundancy should one of the transmitters stop working. In the meantime, RNZ Pacific Manager Moera Tuilaepa-Taylor said they were making sure all of RNZ's Pacific partners were aware of the alternative ways to access RNZ content during the replacement process: "While digital transmissions will continue, the decommissioning of Transmitter 1 will mean the analogue service will be reduced during the transition period. However, RNZ can still be heard via satellite, and we will be working with our partners in the Pacific on the alternative options of downloading or livestreaming through our website. RNZ Pacific also has an important role during Cyclone season, delivering critical information to the region and this will be prioritised during this period of single transmitter operation." RNZ Chief Executive and Editor in Chief, Paul Thompson, said the impor- tance of the service for the region cannot be underestimated in terms of the content provided: "Our voice reaches and is welcomed in all parts of the Pacific. During the Tonga eruption, when the undersea cable was cut, RNZ Pacific shortwave was a lifeline source of information", he said. RNZ's Charter includes the provision of an international service to the South Pacific in both English and Pacific languages. As part of Budget 2022, the New Zealand Government announced NZ$4.4m dollars capital fund- ing for a new transmitter for RNZ Pacific. OMAN 9780 kHz Fri, Oct 3, at 1850-1900 UT. However, two frequencies per broadcast will continue to be coordinated and programmed into the respective transmitter controls. In Galbeni and Tiganesti, only one of the two transmitters will actually be switched on. In the event of maintenance work or defects in the trans- mitter that was actually intended to be used, the other transmitter will be switched on as a replacement - with the "second frequency" that has al- ready been programmed. These alternative frequencies can best be found in the HFCC table: In Galbeni, all broadcasts have apparently been running on the "other" transmitter for about three days and thus on the other frequencies, e.g., Romanian 1300-1500 UTC temporarily on 17780 kHz instead of 15340 kHz. So as long as the announced nightly 9740 kHz 0300-0400 UT RRI English to- wards NoWeAM via Galbeni site is not working, the program will be avai- lable on 11620 kHz (or perhaps 17790 kHz). In those years, the Kuban Radio Center's longwave/mediumwave transmitters were no longer broadcasting. However, the duty shift maintained the work- shop's operations. Since typical radio center buildings in the USSR lacked heating (the transmitters provided sufficient heat), duty personnel (in those not laid off) would turn on the transmitters during cold weather after broadcasts were suspended, simply by heating them to maintain a comfortable temperature in the building. In August, after an absence of several years, I had the opportunity to re- turn to my old place of residence, namely Honiara in Solomon Islands. I was back in town as keynote speaker at public commemoration to remember the start of the Battle of Guadalcanal (7th August 1942). As a longtime Board member of the Solomons Scouts and Coastwatchers Trust, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to highlighting and remembering the role of Solomon Islanders operating with the Allies during WWII,it was an honour to be invited. Many DXers will know that the Coastwatchers used AWA Teleradios (mainly of the 3B and 3BZ series) operating on a 'secret' X frequency (6675 kc/s) to transmit vital intelligence on Japanese military movements to Allied HQ in Australia. From 1980 to 1984, I had the pleasure of living in Honiara as News / Pro- gramme Trainer and, later, Head of Development and Training, on a major Australian aid project to develop the Government-owned Solomon Islands Broadcasting Service (SIBS) into an independent Solomon Islands Broadcast- ing Corporation (SIBC). The project involved the construction of a completely new Broadcasting House studio complex containing the most modern equipment available at the time, the commissioning of new MW and SW transmitters plus aerial systems at the Henderson transmission site, the opening of regional SIBC stations at Gizo (Western Province) and Lata (Temotu Province), and the recruitment and training of a new staffing table. While visiting Honiara in August this year, I dropped into my former place of employment and had the pleasure of meeting the current SIBC CEO, Johnson Honimae. He kindly took me on a tour of the facilities and I was delighted to note the pristine condition of the building since its inau- guration in 1982. It was also splendid to recognise the quality of the radio news and programming output of the national broadcaster, the finan- cial viability of the whole operation, and the professionalism and pre- sentation of the SIBC staff, all wearing printed SIBC tropical shirts. One major studio space in the building is now used exclusively for SIBC- TV daily news and current affairs programming, a new venture since my days with the organisation. The SIBC is currently in the process of developing a new planning document for the future. This is expected to include the establishment of a new station, Radio Temotu, in the eastern part of Solomon Islands. The origi- nal Radio Lata station (broadcasting on MW and heard by several DXers in Australia and New Zealand) left the air many years ago, due to financial and technical issues. The new station may well again operate on MW, thus bringing a nice potential DX 'catch' for ARDXC members. It was delightful to chat with current SIBC staff and to brief them on some historical details of the original SIBC project of which they had little knowledge. For example, most were unaware that the original Austra- lian aid project and building design was managed by Ove Arup and Partners, the same firm that built the Sydney Opera House. Perhaps it is thanks to the quality construction work of this prestigious company that the SIBC complex has withstood earthquakes, cyclones and even civil insurrection. The official opening plaque on the building from 1982 is still in place. At the time, the SIBC was named Radio Hapi Isles, so the General Manager, Ashley Wickham, and I scoured the Bible for an appropriate quotation on happiness to fit the criteria. We found it ... and it is still on the plaque. Martin Hadlow, SIBC 1980-84. Postscript: Martin also produced a short booklet for the SIBC in 1982, which we are happy to provide in PDF form for anyone who drops a request note to the club's address on the HQ page. News received from inside RNE indicate that regional engineers have re- cieved the order to lower the power of all MW transmitters in their re- spective areas. Local station managers have been instructed to refer any listener complaints to the "Defensora de la Audiencia" (Ombudsman). High-power stations have been broadcasting at only half power for a long time. I don't know if this order means an even greater reduction, or if it doesn't affect them at all. The Voice of Vietnam marked its 80th founding anniversary, recalling its historic first broadcast its first official news programme on 7 September 1945. On that day, from the capital Hanoi, VOV aired the contents of the Declaration of Independence, formally proclaimed by President Ho Chi Minh to the nation and the international community on Sept 2, 1945, heralding the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. From that moment, VOVTN grew from modest beginnings into the nation's first symbol of independent media, carrying the voice of the Party, the State and the people. Over the decades, VOV has remained a constant companion in both war and peace, chronicling Vietnam's struggles and achievements while adapting to the changes of each era. From a single radio station, it developed into a leading multimedia organisation, trusted to preserve cultural identity, inform public opinion, and project Vietnams voice to international audien- ces. On this special occasion, VOV was honoured with the Ho Chi Minh Order for the third time, recognising its outstanding contributions to the na- tion's revolutionary path and development. At the anniversary ceremony, Party and State leaders praised VOV for its creativity, resilience and service to the nation. VOV President Do Tien Sy reaffirmed the broadcaster's commitment to innovation, highlighting plans for a National Digital Radio Infrastructure Project to modernise produc- tion and expand global reach. VOVTN set its sights on joining the world's top 100 media organisations by 2045, continuing its mission as the trusted "Voice of Vietnam." A reminder about our DX Meeting in Reading, next Saturday afternoon 18th October 1430-1700 BST in Room 3 at Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC), 35-39 London St, Reading RG1 5PS. Chris Greenway will tell the story of Radio Vltava, the GDR-based clande- stine radio station targeting Czechoslovakia on mediumwave in 1968-69. We'll also show some new radio-related films. And during the break for refreshments and after the meeting there's always time to chat with like- minded radio enthusiasts. The meeting is open to all radio enthusiasts, not just BDXC members. RISC is just a ten minute walk from Reading station in the town centre and it would be great to welcome some new faces ! Access to the meeting by foot is via the passage at the side of the RISC World Shop on London Street. See: See our diary page at: Hope to see you there ! (Dave Kenny-UK, British DX Club-UK news Oct 11) EDXC The future of the European DX Council. An update from Christian Ghibaudo-Nice-France. Dear friends, Chrissy Brand-UK and I, Christian Ghibaudo-F, ceased our duties as Secre- tary General and Assistant Secretary General at the end of 2023. I remain on an interim basis pending the appointment of new leaders. Unfortunately, we have to note that no one has come forward to replace us. Moreover, since the end of the Covid pandemic, we have only noticed a lack of in- terest in EDXC activities. The 2024 meeting in Tartu Estonia, was a success thanks to the strong par- ticipation of SDXL members from Finland. For this year 2025, no EDXC member club had offered to organise our annual conference. Nevertheless, we were able to meet thanks to an invitation from the Swedish club SDXF to join their annual DX Parliament in Ullared. It was a very interesting and friendly meeting, but unfortunately there were only 12 of us from the EDXC ... So now we can ask ourselves the question: are you still interested in the EDXC ? It would be nice to hear if at least one person has volunteered to lead the association. Will it be possible to hold a meeting in 2026 ? Each club is invited to submit a proposal so that we can meet. If no res- ponses or proposals are forthcoming, we may be forced to dissolve the European DX Council. And that would be in 2027, if that happens, and that would be a tragic anniversary for the EDXC, which will be celebrating its 60th anniversary ! I look forward to receiving your proposals by the end of this year, to know your opinion ! I thank you and hope for your continued support. Sincerely, Christian Ghibaudo-Nice-France Oct 3 #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* vy73 de Wolfgang DF5SX END
