I never managed to hear this ID but the other day I heard "Russkoe Piratskoe Radio" (Russian Pirate Radio) and e-mail address I sent off a report and the next day came a response from Evgeny Shaden with a QSL and some info: 'Russian Pirate Radio' is indeed the name of the station, "Music Wave Radio" together with "Nostalgic Broadcasts" and "Radio Wagner" {Russian Legion of Foreign Soldiers group left Mali terri- tory recently} are just the titles of the programmes. My observation is, that their programmes are generally biased towards patriotism. Their schedule is Saturday and Sunday 1900 "until early in the morning". They give the transmitter power as 20 kW, which would explain the strength, but they will not disclose even the country where the transmitter is located. F_B Radio Magazine (Michel FREMY-BEL, wor Sept 26) FRANCE re Antennas blown down at TDF Selestat France, see bcdx file #1629 Briefly, for those who did not scroll down in this multi-lingual post: A six-tower Radio France-TDF MW antenna array west of Selestat, { Haut- Koenigsbourg near Strasbourg, ed. } France, was dismantled last week, according to the Derniere Nouvelles d'Alsace newspaper. The Selesat trans- mitter site was first used in 1952 (replacing {pre WW II installation, ed.} Brumath). Most recently, it transmitted on 1278 kHz for 'Radio Bleu Alsace'until it was shut down in 2015. I was told once that in its last few years, only three of the six towers were being used. The towers could easily be seen from the nearby A35autoroute and the sight of six sets of blinking red lights was reassuring whenever I drove by. I noticed in July that several of the towers were no longer lit. There were several occasions when I would stop at the site and wonder what was inside the large, majestic transmitter building. There was no signage other than a small metal TDF sign on the drive into the complex. Several houses surround the greenspace in front of the building. There was talk a couple of years ago that the city might put housing there, but according to the DNA_article the property still belongs to TDF. "16. September 2025 2. Oktober 2025 (Radioszene website) GREECE Re: from "Proto Programma" to ERTnews Radio, "Greece's Public Radio Faces a Turning Point". Earlier today, while passing through Aggelaki Street, I came across two ERT3 employees on their break. In a brief exchange, they mentioned that if the rebranding to ERTnews goes ahead in Athens, the same change is expected to follow for Thessaloniki's First Programme within a couple of months. This would place the timeline around October — a move that is likely to trigger strong reactions among local residents. - I await your feedback. The Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) has announced a significant transformation: its historic "Proto Programma" (First Programme) is being rebranded as ERTnews Radio. The change, effective today September 15, marks a new era for Greece's oldest public radio channel, shifting it more clearly toward news and current affairs. What Has Been Announced. According to ERT, the station will continue broadcasting on 91.6 and 105.8 FM, but with a renewed identity and a heavier focus on news coverage. The move aligns the radio brand with the already existing ERTnews television channel, creating a unified image for the corporation's news services. The broadcaster argues that this rebranding responds to "growing demands for reliable information" and reflects its strategy to modernize public service media. A Sudden Decision. Interestingly, only a week earlier, the same station had promoted a new linkage of its "Proto Programma" shows, suggesting stability rather than change. This has led to speculation that the name change was not broadly communicated within ERT's own management and instead arrived like "a bolt from the blue." Reactions and Concerns. The decision has sparked mixed reactions across Greece's media landscape and among listeners: Loss of heritage: "Proto Programma" is one of the oldest names in Greek broadcasting, dating back to the post-war years. Many consider it a cultu- ral brand in itself, tied to music, literature, and radio history. Critics describe the rebranding as historically careless. Internal resistance: Reports suggest that parts of ERT's own staff were caught off guard and have voiced dissatisfaction, fearing the new direc- tion may undermine the station's identity. Programming uncertainty: While the new title emphasizes news, it remains unclear how much traditional content—such as music, cultural shows, and literature—will survive in the revamped schedule. Marketing vs. substance: Media commentators question whether the change is driven more by branding than by any meaningful investment in quality journalism. Public Sentiment. At present, large-scale public protests have not emerged, but social media discussions and radio forums show a degree of unease. Some listeners ex- press disappointment at losing the familiar name and fear that variety programming will give way to a continuous news cycle. Others welcome the idea of a clearer, dedicated news station that mirrors international standards. The sentiment could develop further once the new format is fully imple- mented and listeners experience the day-to-day content. What Remains Unclear. Several issues have not yet been clarified: Will existing hosts and programs be reassigned or discontinued? How much of the cultural and musical DNA of "Proto Programma" will remain in ERTnews Radio? Was there meaningful dialogue with audiences before taking this step, or was it a top-down decision ? A Turning Point for Public Radio. For Greece, the transition of "Proto Programma" into ERTnews Radio repre- sents more than a cosmetic rebrand. It raises deeper questions about the role of public service broadcasting: Should it prioritize continuous news delivery, or preserve its legacy of cultural diversity and historical continuity? Whether the move strengthens ERT's relevance in the digital era or alie- nates loyal audiences will become clear in the months ahead. For now, one thing is certain: a familiar name in Greek radio has been consigned to history, replaced by a brand that signals both ambition and controversy. We aren't sure if we'll have such a leader again. He was truly our hope," said Choi Jung- hoon, a defector who worked with Kim for seven years. Shortwave radio broadcasts. Kim, a former North Korean army captain who arrived in South Korea in 1999, began shortwave radio broadcasts into North Korea where most of people have no official access to foreign news in 2005. It was the first such South Korean civilian radio station run by a defector. His station's news has included everything from success stories of North Korean defectors in South Korea and the purported luxurious life styles of the North's ruling Kim family to political news in South Korea, the U.S. and elsewhere. Before the 2012 U.S. presidential election, Kim told The Associated Press that his station recorded a special program explaining a U.S. election system and comparing it with a North Korean system, where a sole candidate wins nearly 100% of the votes cast at each district in parliamentary elec- tions. "We also explained that in South Korea it's hard for one candidate to win more than 50% of votes cast, as there are diverse opinions. (In the U.S.), challengers often compete against an incumbent president, and we stressed that's something that couldn't happen in North Korea," Kim said. Kim's station also threw plastic bottles containing USB sticks with world news and South Korean TV dramas and K-pop songs into the sea to let them float toward North Korean shores on the tides. He had sources in North Korea who used illegal mobile phones to sneak news from the country before his station relayed them back to people in other parts of North Korea. Kim frequently appeared at rallies, forums and TV programs to criticize North Korea's widely condemned human rights records. 'Help people understand'. Kim's works angered North Korea, which maintains an extremely tight con- trol on the spread of outside information to its 26 million people as a way to bolster the Kim family's grip on power. North Korea's state media called Kim "a human garbage." Kim also received parcels carrying dead mice and dolls stuck with knives, likely from pro-North Korea groups in South Korea. In another interview with the AP in 2014, Kim discussed the accuracy issue of North Korea news, which outsiders like him obtained via phone talks with their contacts in the North but often turned out to be false. "There are lots of stories about North Korea, and I think all of them are good as long as they don't praise that country," Kim said. "I think they will help people understand the North's dictatorship." Kim told his colleagues that he felt deeply fulfilled whenever some North Korean defectors told him that they had listened to his radio broadcasts in the North. Among them is Lee Si-young, who worked with Kim for about 10 years and be- came new head of their radio station in December, after Kim's condition worsened. Lee said when she first met Kim, she could recognize his voice as he appeared at radio broadcasts that she had listened to. "I was so excited to meet and work with him here," she said. Aimed for 'a liberal unification'. Civilian campaigns to transmit outside news to North Korea have suffered a major setback after the current liberal South Korean government, led by President Lee Jae Myung, began cracking down on them in a bid to ease ten- sions with North Korea since taking office in June. Lee Si-young said her group stopped floating plastic bottles, while other organizations suspended flights of large balloons with propaganda leaf- lets and USB sticks across the border. Lee's government halted key govern- ment-run radio broadcasts into North Korea, but hasn't asked civic groups to do the same. The Free North Korea Radio station airs broadcasts two hours a day. Lee Si-young said Kim took part in broadcasts until July and told her and others that "our efforts to send outside news to North Korea must not be ceased until one last defector is left." Monday's broadcast posted on the station's website still uses Kim's pre-recorded opening comments. "Hello, North Korean compatriots. Now, we're beginning Free North Korea Radio broadcasts from Seoul, the capital of Republic of Korea," Kim said. "Our objective is overthrowing the dictatorship by Kim Jong Un and achiev- ing a liberal unification on the Korean Peninsula." Idris commended President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing the upgrade of Nigeria's broadcasting infrastructure, noting that the project will re- position VON as a global radio brand and significantly transform terre- strial broadcasting in the country. He urged the contractor to deliver the project on time and to the highest standards, while charging the VON technical team to show diligence in supervising the execution.
