(Bernd Seiser-D, via Dr. Hansjoerg Biener-D, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Sept 10) ARMENIA/TURKEY {target radio to all-KURDISTAN, in TUR/SYR/ARM/IRQ/IRN } On May 12, 2025, the Kurdish PKK announced the end of its armed struggle against the Turkish state, which it had waged since 1984, and the disso- lution of its organizational structures. The two-week shutdown of a Kurdish exile radio station and its Turkish jamming transmitter, observed in July 2025, seemed to fit this context. As of July 31, 2025, the cat-and-mouse game resumed. In contrast to much earlier times, the Kurdish radio station's broadcasting hours are limited to 4:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and to a frequency in the 11.5 MHz range. On August 1, 2025, British shortwave expert Alan Holder_G4ZBH wondered, "Who is actually monitoring the situation? I suspect that someone in both Emirler (Turkey) and Gavar (Armenia) sites is monitoring the situation and making the necessary adjustments. With 12 hours of daily broadcasting, it must be a rather arduous task to keep the situation under control. I noticed that the Armenian engineer is making the adjustments more quickly, as only one shortwave transmitter is in operation. With up to five transmitters broadcasting simultaneously at Emirler, the workload for the Turkish technician is greater. Hence the delays in tracking the Kurdish transmitter." (World of Radio-egroup item of 1. August 2025) During our own monitoring over several hours on August 1, 2025, the part about the freedom from interference for several hours was certainly cor- rect. Mostly, but at 14:18 UTC, 'Denge Gel' "voluntarily" switched for 45 minutes from an interference-free frequency to the shortwave of the jammer, also called Radio Erdogan because of the speeches of some short- wave enthusiasts. 'Denge Gel' repeatedly emitted other noises, but these were likely the transmitter's own products (high-pitched tones, chirping). They disappear- ed when the transmitter changed frequency. The jammer could also be ob- served on a different frequency in such cases. During another attempt on September 1, 2025, the jammer seemed to be quite successful, as it covered most of 'Denge Gel' and then found it again within half an hour. However, at 04:30 UTC, it seemed to switch away. Be- cause the Turkish pop program and the speech could not be clearly identi- fied, the project was ultimately canceled. During a third project on the morning of September 5, 2025, the Kurdish station repeatedly escaped the Turkish jamming for extended periods. It began after 06:00 UTC with 'Denge Gel' on 11530 kHz and Radio Erdogan on 11510 kHz. Starting at 6:45 a.m., the jamming station blocked 'Denge Gel' on 11530 kHz. At 7:05 a.m., the Kurdish station moved to 11540 kHz and was not blocked there until 7:59 a.m. 'Denge Geld' moved to 11550 kHz at 8:07 a.m. and remained undisturbed until the end of the continuous listen- ing period, fading out after 9:00 a.m.+. Regarding the program of 'Denge Gel': Every hour on the hour, there seems to be a detailed newscast (15 minutes!?). There were also longer spoken- word segments and Kurdish music throughout the rest of the hour. The jamm- ing station's program consisted of the usual content (alleged Erdogan speeches, words on a background music, military music, the crackling of machine guns, Allah Akber chants, the Turkish national anthem), but also more pop music than the reporter had previously noticed. At 0220 UT, 9710 kHz S=9+25dB breaking up, 6000 kHz OK but a bit distorted, S=9+40dB. At 0453 UT, 6000 kHz VG S=9+20/30dB, good mod; 9710 kHz S=9+10/20dB breaking up and now atop some CCI, which would be VATICAN radio in Ukrai- nian / Russian at 0440-0500-0520 UT daily. Same breakup into Maryland remote SDR unit, so a transmission, not reception problem. 9710 kHz much stronger than 6000 kHz. At 0619 UT, 9710 kHz still on breaking up in English, 6000 kHz off. At 0635 UT, 9710 kHz S=9+10dB direct, still on in English breaking up. Not checked further tonight. At 1903 UT check, 15140 kHz again with RHC English, S8/S9 direct but undermodulated. Another report, in the British DX Club: "Radio Havana Cuba heard in English on 6000 kHz this morning from 0415 UT tune-in until trans- mitter closed at 0600 UT. Good readable signal but slight hum. It was // 9710 kHz which suffered some slight audio break-up but was still very readable. Somethings always wrong at RHC. 11760 & 15140 kHz, Sept 5 at 1357UT, RHC in Spanish; 15230 kHz also on but dead air if not JBM; and something else? on 13780 kHz. 11760 kHz, Sept 6 at 1906 UT, JBA carrier, maybe RHC when it's not scheduled, nor is it TDF DRM which is irr. possible. First checked 15140 kHz where RHC resumed English: zilch 11760 kHz S8/S9 // 15140 kHz S7/S8, Sept 7 at 1432 UT, RHC in Spanish, good modulation, and a JBA carrier on 15230 kHz, when nothing else is listed. Something's always wrong at RHC. 15140 kHz Chris Campbell says he got this from his RHC contact today Sept 3: "This is the latest information about RHC's shortwave service. As of yesterday, broadcasts resumed from the Nauta {sic: Bauta site} Center on transmitters 4 and 5 on frequencies 11760, 15140 and 11950 kHz. We now have programs on shortwave. The 2:00 a.m. English program, which was scheduled to air on 6100 kHz, is now being broadcast on 11760 kHz be- cause there is no antenna for that frequency" Then I check 15140 kHz at 1846 UT and get a JBA carrier direct. After 1900 UT into Georgia? remote it is RHC in English but VP signal. The 1900 UT English broadcast had not been heard for many months. Further chex at 2159 UT direct: 15230 kHz is on with algo, no 15140 or 13780 kHz. At 2350 UT, none of all these frequencies audible into Maryland SDR. 15140 kHz Sun Sept 7 at 1930, RHC S=8/9+5dB into Knoxville SDR amid English about revolution, 1933 UT "coming up next, we've got music...". {AUSTRALIA/ESWATINI-Swaziland/PHILIPPINES/UZBEKISTAN} "For nearly 50 years, TWR has proclaimed the Good News from a powerful shortwave station on Guam Merizo." However, in the summer of 2025, TWR had bad news for listeners and donors: "As valuable as the Guam station has been to the work of Trans World Radio, we have faced many challenges there in recent years, from the high cost of living on the island to the unsu- stainable workload of the staff and the constant strain on the equipment. Another pressing issue is our aging transmitters, which are becoming in- creasingly vulnerable to unforeseen, catastrophic failures. We do not be- lieve that raising funds to replace this expensive equipment would be a wise use of resources already needed in other areas of our work. After months of intense prayer, study, and discussion, TWR's global leadership unanimously decided to cease operations on Guam by October 31, 2025." Initial reasons. In an email to his Japanese shortwave friend Atsuhisa Kageyama in June 2025, Mike Sabin,Asia Broadcast Technical Operations Director of TWR, went into detail. He summarized two main reasons, both related to costs. (1) The last fulltime broadcast technician was due to retire in June 2025. However, he would stay until the end of the broadcast season. New employ- ees are difficult to recruit, especially given the high maintenance costs on Guam. As a reminder, US radio missions are generally "works of faith" in which employees finance themselves through circles of friends back home. Missions have long struggled to recruit technical missionaries. Even in the secular business, AM-savvy technicians are very rare in North America, or they work on a contract basis out of retirement. (2) None of the aging shortwave transmitters currently receive support from their original manufacturers, making it very difficult to keep them running. TWR cannot afford new transmitters. Therefore,it makes more sense to transfer the remaining programs to other shortwave stations. These could be Christian stations like Reach Beyond Australia, but also com- mercially offered broadcasting capacity, such as the one in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Second reasons. But it wasn't just the shortwave fans who had questions; the donors did too.The announcement on the TWR website was soon supplemented by Frequent- ly Asked Questions, which also provide a glimpse behind the scenes of Donor Relations. Perhaps the most interesting question: "Q: Was the new TWR President, Andy Schick, involved in this decision? A: No,but Andy supports the decision. He was informed about the challenges on Guam before the decision was made. The deliberations that led to this decision began last fall, long before the TWR President Search Committee met with Andy." One wonders about the background: Does this sound like a question of whether new brooms sweep too well, or a consideration of whether the new TWR President should be presented with a fait accompli? In the Answers, Trans World Radio repeatedly thanks the donors who have made 50 years of blessed operation possible. However, it is apparently difficult to convey that the technology is aging. An example: "Q: What will happen to the transmission towers I helped fund? A: Your generosity has enabled TWR to operate effectively all these years. [...] Donations from you and other loyal supporters have enabled TWR to utilize the transmission towers far beyond normal expectations. Although we have extended the lifespan of the transmission towers, we cannot main- tain them indefinitely. The only way to continue broadcasting from Guam would be to replace all the towers in the coming years, and that would be extremely costly." The word "demolition" is avoided; the fact is self-evident. The broadcast- ing site, leased from the government in 1976, must be vacated by next summer and will then be returned when the lease expires in June 2026. By that time, the future of the last remaining missionary at the station should be clear. Even after months, the justification, with living costs of up to $20,000 (approximately €17,000) per month for a missionary family, sounds outra- geous. For comparison, here's a piece of information from Tagesschau: "Full-time employees in Germany brought home a median gross income of €52,159 last year [!]. This means that half of the employees earned exac- tly this amount or more, including special payments, while the other half received less, according to the Federal Statistical Office. Unlike the average value, this median value halves the distribution: As a result, 50 percent are above or below the median." 8th April 2025) "Cost-of-living pressures on Guam, largely due to the military buildup on the island, have driven the need for missionary support to unaffordable levels—sometimes as much as $20,000 per month for some families. Guam has become one of the most expensive mission destinations in Asia and Oceania. Missionary families are increasingly struggling to find afford- able housing and a Christian education for their children." The term "buildup" sounds alarming in the Trump era, but it probably has more to do with the fact that the US hasn't had its large military bases in the Phi- lippines since the 1990s. This $20,000 likely includes the cost of private schools for the children, because the public school system cannot be trusted. These sums will be sig- nificantly higher than, for example, the cost of a military base in the Philippines. This is the case, for example, in Germany, where private schools are also largely funded by the state and parents receive govern- ment assistance with school fees. The conclusion: In recent years, missionary candidates have repeatedly found, when preparing budget proposals for their missions in Guam, that they would have to beg for two to four years to raise the necessary funds. Relocations. The HC100 shortwave transmitter, commissioned in 1995, or parts and other equipment could perhaps be relocated to TWR Eswatini-Swaziland, where HC100s are already in use. On the other hand, an attempt is being made to sell the two Thompson TRE2326 transmitters that arrived from Darwin, Australia, in the early 2010s. At 250 kW, these are somewhat oversized for the capabilities of a radio mission. Furthermore, the HC100s were specifi- cally developed by the HCJB transmitter company with a view to cost- effective and repairfriendly operation by mission transmitters in develop- ing countries. The DX world immediately speculated whether KTWR would actually make it to the scheduled end of broadcasting at the end of October. In fact, the situ- ation is somewhat unclear. For example, Bernd Seiser received a broadcast schedule dated May 2025 in response to a reception report. However,accord- ing to the HFCC registration, the transfer of broadcasts had already begun long ago. This not only includes FEBC Manila and Reach Beyond Australia as upcoming partners, but also flexible booking options for shortwave stations in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Interestingly, there is no reference to the transmitter in Palau, which is also operated as a mission station. FEBC Manila for China and Northeast Asia to Southeast Asia. Reach Beyond Australia for the area from Indonesia to India. It is assumed that not all of the broadcasting will find a new home. Either because an organization is withdrawing from shortwave altogether, or because the programs were already included in the schedules of other locations. It is also important to note that many of the traditional/ renowned radio organizations that were still committed to "the world up to the year 2000" and were able to be won over as sponsors of foreign languages no longer exist today. Employees of public broadcaster RRI took part in a ceremony marking the institution's 80th anniversary at the RRI headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday, September 11, 2025. {...} History of RRI. RadioRepublikIndonesia is the country's only national radio station owned by the government. It was officially founded on September 11, 1945, a date now commemorated as National Radio Day in Indonesia. RRI was established following a meeting of delegates from six radio sta- tions at the home of Adang Kadarusman, where Dr. Abdulrahman Saleh was appointed as the organization's first general director. Prior to RRI's founding, Indonesia's first radio broadcast was launched by Bataviasche Radio Vereniging (BRV) on June 16, 1945 from the Hotel des Indes in Batavia (now Jakarta). During the Dutch East Indies era, several private radio broadcasters emerged, including NIROM (Nederlandsch-Indische Radio Omroep), SRV (Solossche Radio Vereniging), and MAVRO (Mataramse Vereniging Voor Radio Omroep). Among these, NIROM was the most extensive, receiving full support from the Dutch colonial government. Meanwhile, SRV, founded in 1933 by Mang- kunegoro VII and engineer Sarsito Mangunkusumo, pioneered Indonesian-led radio broadcasting. Radio broadcasting in Indonesia continued to evolve. During the Japanese occupation beginning in 1942, Japan seized Dutch- wned stations and consolidated private broadcasters under a centralized system known as Hoso Kanri Kyoku. Its main station was located in Jakarta, with branches in cities such as Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya. These stations primarily served as tools for Japanese propaganda. However, broadcasts ceased following Japan's surrender in August 1945. On September 11, 1945, representatives from eight former Hoso Kyoku sta- tions met with the Indonesian government in Jakarta and officially founded Radio Republik Indonesia. The station was presented to the President and the government as a means of communication between the state and its citizens. (via Zacharias Liangas, Thessaloniki-GRC, wor Sept 11) KOREA REP OF The South Korean Ministry of Defense announced a complete cessation of broadcasting of the propaganda radio station "Voice of Free- dom", which for 15 years broadcast news and popular music for residents of North Korea. This was reported by the Yonhap agency. The station's closure was a continuation of President Lee Jae-myung's po- licy aimed at easing the situation and finding ways to dialogue with Pyongyang. Radio "Voice of Freedom" first went on air in May 2010 - as a response to the sinking of the South Korean corvette "Cheonan", which, according to Seoul, was sunk by a North Korean submarine. Since then, the radio station has become an important tool of information pressure: its broadcasts included reports on events in the world and on the Korean Peninsula, including information about the dispatch of North Korean troops to Russia last year. However, it is by no means the case that only the USA is rethinking its donation practices. According to current estimates, 'Radio Dabanga' will also no longer re- ceive funding from the Netherlands and will cease operations in January 2026. In this context, the station launched a charm offensive in August 2025. Numerous Dutch media outlets (De Volkskrant, NPO Radio 1, among others) reported on the important work of the information provider from and to Sudan. Co-founder Leon Willems did not want to play one off against the other: "The focus [of European interest] is on Gaza strip Palestine, Ukraine, and our own problems. That is all justified. But Sudan must also be in focus." Editor-in-Chief Kamal Elsadig was apparently less diplomatic - A press report stated: " 'Radio Dabanga' is the only independent news source for millions of Sudanese. The question is, for how long? Funding is drying up, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to connect with people in this famine- and war-stricken country. [...] The war in Sudan is a 'forgotten conflict,' to which Western media and politicians pay relatively little attention. This is partly because the West has virtually no direct interest in Sudan. It does not supply weapons to warring parties and does not maintain close economic ties with the country." We, as a group of radio amateurs and specialists in the field of radio communications, were shocked when we received information that a decision had been made to dispose of a completely working radio center, and the vacated lands would be transferred to agriculture. What kind of sabotage is this ? How could anyone even think of such a thing, that a fully working radio center, where several years ago, due to a long downtime, restoration work was underway by personnel who love their brainchild, and after the resto- ration there were even test broadcasts, and we here in the community were witnesses, and also took part in receiving and sending reports, due to heavy bureaucracy, not only began to go on the air regularly, but ultima- tely received such a verdict. Followed by huge MW and LW installations. The official start of the Bolshakovo broadcasting center was on LW/MW on December 24, 1974, the HF section ("Tsekh 2") was only added in May 1975. Bolshakovo was original also a Russian Skywave shortwave jamming site at 70, 83, and 118degr, hidden in the forest, erected in the northern part of the area soil. Aimed target at European Russia, Moscow, Omsk, Volga, and even eastern Ukraine and Caucasus ARM/AZE/GEO area too. These SW installations were 'hidden in the forest', as were the jamming centers Kovylkino (also built as jamming stations) and Balashikha, which were built entirely in the forest. In December 1975, put into operation a production department number 2, the workers served by the type of radio transmitters "Purga", "Cyclone", "Snowflake", engaged in work on the task in the EDM-2 (jamming of foreign radio stations). Since the URL also uses Chinese characters, please google "2025 Fu-Hsin Broadcasting Station International Shortwave Event." Listeners residing outside of Taiwan can only submit their reception reports by email to All submissions must include (1) a correct, comprehensive reception report, (2) a comprehensive MP3 recording, and, of course, (3) contact information. The MP3 audio recording (15 to 20 seconds) must contain spoken content (e.g., a presenter or interview) and be clearly identifiable as a Fu-Hsin shortwave broadcast. Music is not permitted. The files must be named in the following format: "2025 + Date Received (DDMM) + Location." Reception reports will be confirmed via QSL. There is also a prize draw. It's also interesting to note that only the medium wave 594 kHz and the FM frequency 107.8 MHz are visible on the website. He stated that it had to be discontinued in 2024 due to a lack of donations. The pastor directly links the announcement to the end of US and South Korean broadcasts for North Korea: "Foreign broadcasts change as governments' strategic interests change. Information is sometimes seen as a political tool for regime change or to exert pressure on human rights issues. Christian broadcasters are guided by the words of the Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:2: Preach the word, be ready in season and out of season. Voice of the Martyrs Korea never broad- casts news, information, or politics. We simply preach the word. The end of state broadcasts means that more North Koreans than ever are likely to be exposed to the gospel, as there are fewer other ways to listen. Therefore, we are adding a fifth program." There are sermons Monday through Thursday, and Bible readings Friday through Sunday.
