Morning all, After five days off, RTA Chaine 3 is already back on 252 kHz. Strong and clean signal in Northern Spain. 73 de Jorge (Jorge Garzon-Cantabria-ESP EA1FOV BrDXC-UK groups.io news March 6) Good signal here yesterday (6/3) with another outage when checked at 1000-1030 UTC. Another very brief break at 1230 UTCyesterday also. Good signal again today (March 7) but on recheck at 1420 UT they had gone off again. I extended the range of a VLF convertor to cover the LW band and using a long wire aerial it gives very nice reception of Algeria / Poland on LW on the Tecsun PL-660. Can just hear CHT (Chiltern) aero beacon on 277 kHz as well. Normally this set struggles to pick up Droitwich on 198 kHz on its own and would never receive RTE on 252 kHz when they were on. Back on again at re-check at 1444 UTC, March 7. the replies, fantastic. Of course listening this morning with fresh ears I can hear 'VOA News, Washington DC' in English at the start of the 2230 UT clip, but I would have never known that it was Amharic. Thanks again, 73, Graeme (Graeme Stoker, BrDXC-UK iogr news wor March 5) ETHIOPIA A mediumwave station on 630 kHz heard on the KiwiSDR in Addis Ababa may be associated with the Oromia Education Bureau and broadcasts pre-recorded lessons for students in Oromo and Amharic (I have not noticed what might be considered as live programmes). A lot of typical Horn of Africa type music is played, as well as a repeti- tive xylophone-style tune between some lessons. I have translated snippets and come up with various introductions, such as "This is a 7th grade Amha- ric language course prepared by the Oromia Education Bureau", "This is a 5th grade environmental science lesson","This is a 7th grade lesson in the field of physical education", "This program is designed for those who are learning Amharic as a second language" etc, but no clear indication as to the actual station name. As would be expected for student lessons, it is heard during what would be the daytime in Ethiopia.Judging from the strength of reception, the trans- mitter appears to be located in Addis Ababa. (observations during February by Tony Rogers-UK, via BrDXC-UK 'Communication' PDF file magazine March 2025) Re: Ethiopia (MW 630 kHz) educational programming. <https://zliangaslogs.wordpress.com/2025/02/11/ksdr-addis-ababa-11-2-25/> THERE IS SOME INFO ON THE STATION IN 630 kHz WITH SOME TRANSCRIPTION HELP I've been following the station on 630 kHz since Friday (7 March), of course using the Addis Ababa webSDR. At 0500 UT on that day they played their interval signal and identified in Oromo, a strong and clear ID but only 'clear' if one understands the lingo - the only word I recognized was 'barnootaa' [education]. Recording here: <https://www.intervalsignals.net/sounds/unid-eth_oromo_630kHz_070325.mp3> 7 seconds into the recording under the main audio you can hear the speak- ing clock with a time check in English, which happens at the top of every hour. The IS & ID is followed by a 15-second burst of HoA music then what appears to be a station jingle. The signal was loud and clear, equally as strong as the RadioEthiopia out- let on 873 kHz. On Friday I monitored the station on and off between 0445- 1400 UT then found it was off air when I checked again around 1900 UT. Yesterday it was either off air completely or I tuned in too late (0900UT) - today I found it on air at 0745 UT however it was off air when I tuned back at 0830 UT. (David Kernick-UK, Interval Signals Online, wor March 7) Thanks very much to Tony for his informative observations. Have conducted an online search to learn more about 630 kHz and the broadcasting of this educational programming. Have been successful in finding a very detailed explanation. This decision comes after previous transmission equipment on shortwave, mediumwave and longwave was switched off years ago and most of the masts have already been destroyed. The masts in Junglinster, Luxembourg, are now also listed for demolition, despite their status as protected monuments. Radio Luxembourg began broadcasting in 1932,and the Junglinster masts,sym- bolising the legendary transmitter, were inaugurated on 15 March 1933. These three original masts had a height of 180 metres and made Junglinster the most powerful long-wave transmitter in Europe at the time. In 1939, the transmitter was expanded to include shortwave. More here: {in Dutch} <https://www.radiotrefpunt.nl/entry/8161-de-zendmasten-van-radio- luxemburg-in-junglinster-staan-op-de-slooplijst/?> (Svenn Martinsen via gh ok-usa, dxld March 1) Beidweiller masts to be demolished. Contrary to some published informa- tion, Broadcasting Centre Europe (BCE) has received permission to demolish masts at Beidweiller and not at the historic Junglinster site. However, the demolition of Beidweiller antenna is not expected to take place until the end of this year. Regarding Junglinster, its classification as a historical monument is, un- fortunately, only about the main building and not the masts, which are not original. BCE is trying to oppose the ranking measure, but nothing has been said yet. For the site itself it still has importance to BCE for telecoms: satellite antennas can no longer be located at the headquarters on the Kirchberg Plateau, for urban issues. Regarding the long-wave masts, in addition to historical and sentimental interest, they are no longer of interest to BCE. They could potentially serve as support for other modes of broadcasting or connections, provided they are maintained. On the other hand, partial or to- tal dismantling of the masts would make for a very profitable real estate operation. Developers already have plans for this lot of land. So nothing has been decided yet. (Michel Fremy-BEL Radio Magazine F_B 28 Feb. Translated from French; via BrDXC-UK 'Communication' PDF file magazine March 2025) Re: Medium Wave News items, March 2025. Sorry, I accidentally hit "send" while one typo was still in: Please read "2014" as 2024, last year, as amended below. I can reveal that the discoverer of the Luxembourg story, deep in the pro- vince of western Germany (i.e.not me), shook his head when he saw what the "stille Post" made of it. No, the Junglinster station has not been"listed" for demolition, it has been listed as monument. Here's a related document, in itself characteristic for Luxembourg: The form calls for using the French language, but they simply stuck with German. <https://inpa.public.lu/dam-assets/fr/cosimo/juin2021/Junglinster,- Junglinster,-station-emettrice-d-ondes.pdf> Now an appeal to remove the station from the list of monuments has been filed, and so it could be demolished and the grounds be developed for lots of €€€ if the move succeeds. And I would not bet on shortwave operations in Armenia surviving this year, due to a possibility that they could soon lose also the two remaining customers. Further explanations unnecessary I think. Today I managed to take some historical, but sad, footage - the demolition of a section of the shortwave "lattice" of the "SGD RA" of the Kuban Radio Center. At the time of the shooting, it was snowing heavily and for a mo- ment it seemed that nature itself had decided to say goodbye to a unique structure, a miracle of engineering thought, which faithfully served the Soviet Powerful Radio Broadcasting ... Well, everything ends someday, such is our life. Well, all that remains for us is to preserve the memory and, if possible, pass it on to our descendants. P.s. I would like to apologize right away for the shortness of breath, I really wanted to have time to capture these shots) I am attaching a photo taken by me in June 2024, when the antenna system was still "standing quietly" and even illuminated. I would also like to share photos of the installation (1983) of an identical "lattice" of the Kuban Radio Center by a "creeping" crane, which is also being prepared for demolition. What could be added is the use of this equipment (Bob-2, SGD dipole wall) also for one of the frequencies of German, almost always lighting up the full signal strength indicator on the radio. The fun was only spoiled by the rather mediocre carrier system through which the station got this pro- gramme audio. I'm not the only one who remembers the hard gate used at the receiving end to remove the rather high level of hiss and hum, "nicely" cutting off room ambience and script rustling (at this time no muffled podcast-style mics yet, still proper Oktava MK-219 addressed from a classic large distance). (Do I see eyebrows raised because of this nostalgia? Then take this com- ment I saw about the latest move of the White House to select the members of press pools itself: This is exactly how it two decades ago started at the Kremlin.) Has this already been discussed: Are Radio Dabanga and its secession off- shoot Radio Tamazuj at the fringe of extinction? Their airtime gets cut and cut and cut since last year. This is at least the third step, in the case of Radio Tamazuj in between were there broad- casts of 45 and then 30 minutes each. They are obviously running out of money, probably related to the Wilders/Schoof government the Netherlands now have. Haven't there been discussions that there also do not appear to be Vatican Radio transmissions at Talata Volonondry anymore, with all Africa services coming from their own transmitters now ? In fact anything else would be a surprise since they have, as far as I know, never leased airtime on third party facilities for cash, only did classic airtime exchange arrangements. And there is nothing to exchange with MGLOB and its Dutch partners anymore. (Kai Ludwig-D, wor March 9) Re: Radio Dabanga / R Tamazuj facing closure ? I've been wondering about the future viability of the MGLOB facility. Re- cent cutbacks by the BBC and AWR must have affected bookings and operatio- nal income. The Dabanga and Tamazuj cuts won't help that situation. In some articles last year the BBC stated it would not guarantee programm- ing on 198 kHz past June 30,2025, so the Ofgem press release would seem to fit that narrative. IIRC the BBC gave only a few weeks notice of the Radio 4 mediumwave shutoffs last year, so we may not hear official word of the longwave closure until later this spring. This apparently slipped by earlier this year, but was posted today on <RadioDiscussions.com> June 30, 2025 the end of 198 kHz ? <https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/press-release/ofgem-energy-suppliers-and- consumer-groups-back-major-new-advertising-campaign-calling-customers- rts-meters-upgrade-now#:~:text= RTS%20meters%20are%20older%20electricity,down%20from%2030%20June%202025> (Stephen Luce-TX-USA, wor March 6) U.K. Do you subscribe to the BBC Monitoring Disinformation reports ? It takes the form of regular newsletters that"analyse and summarise global media to help you make sense of world events" and can be emailed to you by signing up at <https://monitoring.bbc.co.uk> In the 4 to 11 February newsletter there were articles titled South Africa rejects Trump-Musk accusations on land reform as misinformation; Russian India media make terrorism claims about USAID; Fake TikTokvideos show huge far-right marches ahead of German elections; Disinformation swirls as Baltic states quit Russian power grid; and Panic over fake videos of Santorini volcano. Was written to more or less the same tune as God Save the Queen. <https://mistressofmusic.wordpress.com/2014/02/11/my-country-tis- of-thee-vs-god-save-the-queen-did-we-rip-off-the-uk/> As a long time Neil Young fan I bought his 2012 Americana album, covers of well known folk songs. His version of God Save the Queen has a rarely sung verse; there have been many versions during the years and ends with the 16 strong Americana choir singing the verse from My Country 'Tis of Thee with From Every Mountainside in it.Video here with appropriate footage for both. I didn't know of My Country Tis of Thee before I bought the album. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-nPsrX05Rk> In his notes on the album Neil says how he remembers singing God Save the Queen regularly at school in Canada. Checking today, they were up from 1730 to 2230 UT on 17525 kHz. Tight squeeze from 1730-1830 UT in A-25 if VOA retains that frequency. Of course the entire USAGM shortwave output could be facing drastic cuts, so who knows what will happen. (Stephen Luce-TX-USA, wor March 6) USA Has anyone been able to determine a schedule for WEWN ? The re-ac- tivation of 12050 kHz (Spanish) does not match the published schedule. While sign on is listed as 1400 UT, I haven't noted then much before 0000 UT, although some of that is due to propagation at my QTH, Sign-off is listed as 0600 UT, but in reality they usually seem to leave the air at about 0057 UT, although I have noted them abruptly ending at various times between 0030 and 0100 UT. 15610 kHz (English) is still not back on the air. No doubt its name will soon change to the Voice of Trump. This DOGE dismis- sal is obviously a result of speaking the truth, something that will li- kely soon vanish from the VOA. America has dug itself into a very deep, dark and dangerous hole. (Steve McDonald-CAN, wor March 8) The Voice of America has come a long way since I used to listen to their (Africa) morning magazines on short wave and their VoA Europe on the USAGM Munich Ismaning MW 1197kHz. I always thought that it was a wrong de- cision to change to an all the news all the time format because as seen long before the Covid_19 crisis VoA could not keep the promise. Nonethe- less, for quite a number of years, VoA still presented multi partisan Voices of America. Considering what's left of former glory, the only reason to keep VoA Eng- lish and other services is that FM relays will be lost if VoA is replaced by a straight US government voice. If I were a government official in say Africa I would not bow to American relay requests after the experience with Trump/Vance/Musk/Rubio stopping USAID for crucial medical programmes. reception. It runs on three AA batteries and is expected to be available for purchase in Q4 of this year. <https://www.drm.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/DRM-N88.png> The image was probably generated by an AI that is not familiar with fre- quency ranges. But this is just one of many oddities in this report with its low costs and credibility. Another great gift idea for the Christmas trade. (chirp / via Roger Thauer-D, wor March 8) That needs an explanation I suspect ... On the IFA Berlin Germany in 2005, when this was still an important consu- mer electronics fair (or would anyone say that it still is ?), there was an "official DRM launch" presentation. Amongst the promises made there: Related products will appear in shops for Christmas. On display were some samples with the English brand Roberts that were never seen again. And there was a famous announcement by Sangean that the company "introduziert" such sets. Never seen again either. This was relevant in as far as Deutschlandradio relied on these announce- ments and switched the Zehlendorf 177 kHz transmitter to digital-only ope- ration. On this IFA Berlin event they were still joyful, telling that they got phone calls "is your transmitter broken, it only hisses anymore", hahahaha, - how funny !! But it was no fun anymore when the "Weihnachtsgeschaeft" was due and it turned out that all the displays on that IFA Berlin event were a Fata Morgana. Top brass at Deutschlandradio started asking "why are we paying so much money for a frequency that no one can listen to?", and so they rather hastily switched back to AM, first still leaving three alibi hours at night which finally were eliminated as well and the transmitter got its better-sounding AM modulator back. Just to point it out once again: This all was a full two decades ago.
