(Rudolf Grimm-Sao Bernardo-SP-BRA, hcdx March 3) BRAZIL Radio Brasil Central was founded on March 3, 1950 by Jeronymo Coimbra Bueno (1909- 1996). Coimbra Bueno was an engineer by training and was responsible, among other things, for the construction of Goiania as the capital of Goias in 1934; as a politician, he was governor of this inner- Brazilian federal state from 1947 to 1950. Coimbra Bueno was one of the activists who pushed for the relocation of the Brazilian capital from the coast to the central plateau. With the establishment of Brasilia, one of Radio Brasil Central's first purposes was fulfilled. In 1962,the government of Goias took over the sta- tion, which still belongs to the state today. The website has not been maintained since 2020. Shortwave frequencies still appear in the station's motto song. The frequencies 4985 and 11815kHz were also reported on the Iberian Penin- sula by Manuel Mendez and Carlos Goncalves practically every week in 2024, but not at the turn of the year. Fortunately, this apparent absence was not permanent. (Dr. Hansjoerg Biener-D, Radio-Kurier News and Reports March 2025; via NASWA Journal #3-2025 March, p22) BULGARIA 576 kHz 05. Glenn, OK-USA, wor Febr 26. Re: RHC 6000 kHz off again ? Just heard them at 0510 UT in Spanish - but can confirm that there was nothing an hour earlier. Last night I noted an abrupt cut at 0501:30 UT during English. Nothing heard for at least the next quarter hour. {later} RHC was up this morning at 1159:30 UT on 6000 kHz in Spanish with a good strong signal, with less than perfect modulation, but a listenable signal nonetheless. I did not hear them at the same time the day before. Hey Glenn, An insider at RHC alerted me earlier tonight to try the 6000kHz broadcast this evening. I just got home and I have to say after monitoring and logging them for years, this is the best quality I have heard in a long time. Since their return, I had been supplying audio samples a couple times a week. Each was forwarded to their engineer at the transmitter site (they won't say which one). I also alerted them to the T.O.H.female news reader with the extreme mono- tone voice which is impossible to understand. They took all suggestions well and I was told the equipment is old but there is some things they are trying. I hope this continues and they are requesting additional feedback. (Chris Campbell-Columbus-OH-USA, wor Febr 26) WHO did you find who actually listened ? I've long since 'given up' trying to get the ear of someone at RHC and had written an actual paper letter as well as emails complaining about the technical quality of the broadcasts for YEARS starting back in 2017-2018 or so as I recall. I never got a response ! I'm impressed you not only got the ear of someone but they apparently are trying. I've noticed very VARIABLE quality but yes, sometimes even approaching 'listenable' .... "OLD" does not equal 'nonredeemable' WBCQ has a lot of 'old' equipment and they manage to put out a decent sounding signal most of the time (granted it does take more WORK to keep it going!) and any attempts to keep it sounding reasonable are most appreciated ! 73 Ken Z (Ken Zichi-Wiliamston-MI-USA, wor Feb 28) CUBA March 1st - Also RHC check on remote NoAM Michigan Perseus SDR unit at 04.00 UT today is negative. (wb df5sx, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews March 1) Re: RHC 6000 kHz Quivican San Felipe ITAN bcast center off again? + Hello Wolfgang, 15230 kHz is noted on this morning here at 1320 - 1400 Z time, but carrier only, then at 1402UT some low and poor but readable RHC SPA pgm audio sud- denly appeared. Then at 1405 UT the modulation went up to almost normal, still a bit distorted but not bad for RHC. Then at 1407 UT, the modulation level jumped up again, but worse quality. 49 mband RHC/CRI has been quiet for a few days. I haven't found them on 31 mband either lately. This is the Cuban dry season, so maybe there is some antenna down time for "maintenance", or at least pretending to main- tain. RHC managed to get 2 Quiv txs working in the past month, but are back down to one again perhaps. Bauta and Bejucal are long gone of course. I've suspected that Chinese technicians helped keep Quivican running on behalf of CRI,occasionally maybe, but after La Habana stole too much money from the Chinese, those technicians were probably withdrawn. Just specula- tion LOL. So, they aren't dead yet but certainly still flirting with a permanent exit. One more good hurricane should finish the job. We keep a close eye on the summer storms here too. 5025 kHz 60 mband has been somewhat reliable here, usually a good signal and reasonably good audio. The location of the tx remains a mystery; my money is on La Julia tower, 'unless' they were in an isolated corner of Bauta that is somehow unaffected by the site's wider failure. Arnaldo Coro Antich was certainly a character, a bit over-stated perhaps, but I think you are correct that his role helped hold RHC together techni- cally. And his personal connections and influence with the "old guard" of the regime would have certainly helped get RHC the resources it needed. Among gangsters, personal connections are everything. RadioCuba, not long ago, advertised senior broadcast technician jobs for $3500/yr; you get what you pay for, and that isn't much pay. In the meantime, there is a steady flow of luxury cars from Miami to La Habana for the royalty via third countries. Trump could give Raul and Miguel a gentle nudge and the whole criminal enterprise would collapse, especially given the state of the electric power infrastructure. When Raul dies, and "electrical engineer" / suckup Diaz-Canel is all alone, it might happen without US help. With Rubio, a Cuban exile, in the Trump government, the push might happen yet. Marco is seemingly busy helping to clean up the mess created by the Obama- club demsheviks with Israel and Mexico for the moment, but I imagine Cuba is on his "to-do list" for the near future. Like Gorbachev, he has a nice smile, but don't underestimate the iron teeth. It will be interesting to see if Radio Marti survives the "reor- ganization" also; my guess is that it will. Don't think for a moment that Trump doesn't see the potential of Cuba, and he is usually thinking 5 or 6 steps ahead of the rest of us in such chess games. It would take an entire generation to rebuild the island, and under a Trump strategy it would not be at unilateral US cost either, so look for some future humor about "the 52nd state" LOL. 73, David (David E. The Danish Shortwave Club International - or DSWCI - has served the DX and Shortwave listeners community for 60 years. It was founded November 18, 1956. During it's 60 years of existence, 3786 individuals had been members of the DSWCI. At the time of the last Annual General Meeting on October 8, 2016, the DSWCI still had 227 members living in 33 countries in 6 conti- nents. The DSWCI was "the DX club that had global membership 30 years before Glo- balization"! The DSWCI produced the high-quality magazine "Shortwave News" (9 issues/ year) and a fortnightly newsletter called "DX Window", as well as the yearly "Domestic Broadcasting Survey" with its monthly update "Tropical Bands Monitor". This website presents back issues of these publications. There is also an offer to buy the complete archive of Shortwave News (60 years!) on a DVD. The "Domestic Broadcasting Survey" and the "Tropical Bands monitor" were produced on a private basis by Anker Petersen, former chairman of the DSWCI, until Summer 2024. Our tips editor Klaus-Dieter Scholz continues with tips from former DSWCI-members at <www.dxer.inf> Anker Petersen has passed away in 2024. Alfa Media Group Oy is facing serious problems in getting the Pori- Preiviki medium-wave transmitter back into service on 963 kHz. The group had hoped to start broadcasting religious programmes to Russia by reacti- vating the 600 kW transmitter. The licence was granted on 8 November 2024 by The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency "Traficom". Although the site has not been abandoned, the transmitter has remained unused for 12 years. Therefore, repairs and maintenance will take more time and money than expected. This is a good example of the risks of bringing back into service old sta- tions. The transmitter was manufactured by Brown-Boveri & Cie (BBC), a Swiss company founded in 1891 and manufacturer of transmitters and power lamps since 1937, which took over Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon in 1970. The Pori transmitter was installed in 1987, but the following year BBC merged with ASEA to form ABB. The manufacture of transmitters was discon- tinued and the components became unobtainable or had to be specially manufactured. I think the time has come to realise that the transmitters of the past have no place left, except in museums. Apart from the problems of resto- ration, they are very expensive to operate. We hope they succeed. A simi- lar feat was achieved by Russia at Kaliningrad, but the budgetary con- straints are not the same for a state as for a religious group. Re: 11515 kHz via wor and others. Denge Gel is a pro Kurdish station with a long pre-history under different names (Denge / Voice of Mesopotamia, Denge / Voice of Kurdistan, Voice of the Homeland / Denge Welat, 2023 change to Denge Gel). I think the story starts with a Denge Mesopotamia in 2001. The classic schedule used different transmitter sites to provide a one frequency solu- tion for much of the day with a lower frequency in the evening. E. G. (1) when Kostinbrod was tested and there were even two frequencies. You see the classic 7-MHz / 11-MHz-schedule shining through. (Ivo Ivanov, Dr. Hansjoerg Biener) E. G. (Dr. Hansjoerg Biener) The station is routinely jammed by a Turkish station with Turkish mili- tary music and public speeches of President Erdogan. So this station also carries the nickname Radio Erdogan. Currently / To my knowledge, there is only one frequency in the 11.5-MHz- range used. The Kurdish and the Turkish stations are involved in a cat and mouse game which I do not follow any more. But see look at this example: 240728 11545 0540 2807 UZB Denge Welat, Vn, R. Erdogan 15525 25432 HjBi 240728 11510 0850 2807 UZB Denge Welat, Vn, R. Erdogan 15510 22322 HjBi 240728 11540 1315 2807 UZB Denge Welat, Vn, R. Erdogan 15510 25322 HjBi It really depends on the day, whether and how fast the Turkish station is adapting to the actual frequencies used by the Turkish Kurdish station. I have noted it in passing on rare occasions within the same hour. On other days, and actually it is my feeling this is now on most days, the Kurdish station escapes the Turkish jamming for much of the day. This was already the case, months before jailed Kurdish leader Abdullah Oecalan recently called on the PKK to lay down their arms. This decision comes after previous transmission equipment on shortwave, mediumwave and longwave was switched off years ago and most of the masts have already been destroyed. The masts in Junglinster, Luxem- bourg, are now also listed for demolition, despite their status as protect- ed monuments. Radio Luxembourg began broadcasting in 1932, and the Junglinster masts, symbolising the legendary transmitter, were inaugurated on 15 March 1933. These three original masts had a height of 180 metres and made Junglinster the most powerful long-wave transmitter in Europe at the time. In 1939, the transmitter was expanded to include shortwave. On various social media platforms, we, many of our authors, in particular the Radio Museum and its director V.I. Shapkin, have repeatedly spoken out with an explanation of our position. In general terms, it is that modern digital broadcasting methods promoted today have never reached the provinces, and it may well be (and in our opinion, for sure) never will. There will never be Internet or a digital broadcasting station in the fo- rests of the Northern Urals, there will never be any in the Laptev Sea with a sailor on a seiner during his vacation, and certainly none of this will happen on the banana plantations of Ecuador, coffee plantations in Rwanda, Congo, Peru, Malaysia, etc., where former students of MGIMO or DSTU will listen to the Voice of Russia in the original and better understand what is happening. Two stations, two eras. One station for sailors in the ocean, the second for residents of the Far North. Dear readers, I would be grateful for your messages about the sta- tions that you have listened to or are listening to now. History: "The Fifth Program of the All-Union Radio" - a 24-hour informa- tional, socio-political and artistic, addressed to Soviet citizens outside the country (sailors, fishermen, polar explorers, etc.), sounded on short and medium waves. I remember that on the air were: radio station"Atlantika", which broadcast for sailors in the Atlantic Ocean; a program from Moscow "For those at sea"; a program "For specialists who work in the countries of Asia and Africa"; a program for polar explorers; radio station "Rodina", for those who live abroad and in their souls are nostalgic for Russia. All this is in the past, but it will be pleasant to remember them in the present. - Our history. Radio station "Tikhiy Ocean" / "Pacific Ocean". On April 17, 1963, the radio station "Tikhiy Ocean" went on air for the first time. Radio station "Pacific Ocean" broadcast to the regions of the Pacific and Indian oceans and the Eastern sector of the Arctic. Invisible waves of the favorite radio station of sailors and fishermen of the Far East flew over three great oceans. This was their most reliable and fastest connection with the shore, their home. Forty transmitters were on duty during the sessions of radio station "Tikhiy Ocean". The radio sta- tion's programs went on air three times a day -focusing on the time zones. I didn't know he now lives in Brisbane. Ends with "There will be many people disappointed at losing Radio 1, Radio 2 or 6 music. I have sympathy with that; but also, I want the BBC to succeed, and in order to succeed it needs to be as commercially nimble as it possibly can outside the UK. It can't afford to both earn from non-UK audiences and make music radio available. This is a necessary step. And, at last, a strategy." <https://james.cridland.net/blog/2025/bbc-audio-international/> Comment from James here to an UK expat who is prepared to pay money to access BBC Sounds abroad. As soon as the BBC earns money from the international streams of Radio 1, 2, 6music etc, then they need to pay full music rights for them, which really isn't an option. They only have music rights for the UK, and the loophole is that as long as they don't market the streams abroad, and as long as they don't earn money from them, the music companies turn a blind eye. So (just like iPlayer), your plan isn't a thing they could do. <https://gist.github.com/bpsib/67089b959e4fa898af69fea59ad74bc3#file- bbc-radio-lstn-hls-m3u-L16> Includes links to all BBC webstreams if you scroll up. His version of God Save the Queen has a rarely sung verse, there have been many versions during the years and ends with the 16 strong Americana choir singing the verse from My Country Tis of Thee with From Every Mountainside in it. Video here with appropriate footage for both. I didn't know of My Country Tis of Thee before I bought the album. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-nPsrX05Rk> In his notes on the album Neil says how he remembers singing God Save the Queen regularly at school in Canada. (Mike Barraclough-UK, wor March 3) USA VOA Museum of Broadcasting History reopened after 7-month reno- vation. By_Sue_Kiesewetter After a seven-month closure, the Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting has reopened with more interactive displays and a more comfortable environment that's less crowded and cluttered. "We concentrated heavily on infrastructure," said Jack Dominic, the museum's executive director. The museum used a $500,000 state capital grant and stretched it with volunteer or low-cost labor. Visitors will see fewer walls, better lighting at displays, carpeting throughout, and a new HVAC system providing air conditioning to the building for the first time in its history. "We pulled out miles of electrical cable made out of cloth and steel. We put in all new wiring, LED lighting throughout the building. We have a ventilation system and no more humidity," Dominic said. To make it easier for wheelchair-bound patrons, ramps were added, steps were removed, a new paved parking lot was added, and bathrooms modified to meet requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act. While those structural changes were being made, board member, curator, and docent Leland "Lee" Hite was focusing on the exhibits themselves. The museum complex provided communications worldwide during the World War II era through 1994 when the station stopped broadcasting after it was decommissioned. The Tylersville Road station had six, 200,000-watt transmitters and 24 high directional antennas at its peak, used to send broadcasts to Africa, Europe and South America. The museum showcases that history and includes collections and exhibits from the VOA Bethany station, Media Heritage's Greater Cincinnati Museum of Broadcast History, the Gray History of Wireless Museum; and the West Chester Amateur Radio Association's control room. "I have first-hand knowledge of how people react to exhibits, signage and videos," Hite said. "We try to make exhibits easy, simple, but still informative." Noting that people "like to play with things" Hite made improvements to the listening stations for original, vintage WLW and VOA broadcasts. "We needed to make them more inviting," he said. To do that, the larger, touch screens were added throughout the museum so people no longer had to use a mouse to navigate to the broadcast they were interested in. Several "really comfortable" chairs were added. Lighting changes were added at other exhibits by putting in drop ceilings and focusing the lights just on the exhibit instead of the entire room. "A museum has a message. It might not be obvious if we don't do the exhibit right. I'm an engineer, but I'm not creating an exhibit for engineers," Hite said. "I want it to work for my wife, who is not an engineer. I want people to understand (the exhibit)." Added to the museum is a sound effects - foley - room. Visitors can use 50 different sound effect devices to hear wind, rain, surf, gun shot. Original news broadcasts made and transmitted by the VOA from the 1940s through 90s are also accessible. Among them are the Kennedy assignation, the first man to walk on the moon. "These are all things meant for you to come in and play with," Dominic said. There is an area focusing on the broadcast history of Cincinnati and Dayton. For example, Cincinnati was one of the first cities to use radios for police cars. The display features call boxes placed on streets. Visit the modern radio lab to learn how wi-fi, blue tooth and cellular work. Walk the coast guard courier hallway to learn about the world's largest radio broadcasting ship. Examine the first sports car in history. The businessman said that these radio stations"no one listens to anymore," but they "burn a billion dollars a year from the pockets of American tax- payers." The head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), businessman Elon Musk, proposed on the social network X to close the radio station Voice of America (recognized as a foreign agent in Russia) and Radio Liberty (recognized as a foreign agent, and its legal entity Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL is an undesirable organization in Russia). Musk responded to the post of the former Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell, President Donald Trump's special envoy for special as- signments. He called the radio stations "a relic of the past" that is fund- ed by taxpayers. In particular, the businessman wrote that both should be closed, since "no one listens to them anymore." Musk compared the radio stations to "crazy left-wing radicals who talk to themselves" and "burn a billion dollars a year from the pockets of American taxpayers." Details in Russian: <https://www.rbc.ru/politics/09/02/2025/67a8f9e99a7947083477e797> Elon Musk, recently appointed to lead the Department of Government Effi- ciency (DOGE) by President Donald Trump, has called for the shutdown of U.S.-funded media outlets Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and Voice of America (VOA). Musk argues that these organizations are outdated relics of the Cold War era, no longer relevant in today's geopolitical landscape, and a waste of taxpayer money. His comments echo criticisms made by Richard Grenell, a special envoy for Trump, who described the outlets as "state-owned media" filled with "far-left activists." Sic! Both Musk and Grenell advocate end- ing government funding for such entities, framing them as inefficient uses of public resources. RFE/RL was established in 1949 / 1951 during the early years of the Cold War, initially operating under CIA oversight to broadcast pro-American and anti-Soviet propaganda into Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Origi- nally named "Radio Liberation from Bolshevism,"it later rebranded as Radio Liberty to emphasize liberalization over liberation. Similarly, VOA began in the 1940s to counter Nazi propaganda before shifting focus to anti- Soviet messaging in 1947. Both outlets remain federally funded through the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees their operations and allocates congressional budgets totaling nearly $1 billion annually. Despite claims of reaching hundreds of millions globally, critics like Musk dismiss their relevance, arguing they have been supplanted by modern com- munication platforms. The debate extends beyond RFE/RL and VOA, reflecting broader skepticism about U.S.involvement in foreign media and governance initiatives. For in- stance, USAID - another target of Musk's scrutiny - has funneled signifi- cant funds to international NGOs, opposition groups, and media organiza- tions, often promoting destabilizing "color revolutions" abroad. One no- table example is Internews Network,a secretive NGO heavily financed by the U.S. government since 2008. Internews trains journalists, produces pro- gramming, and advocates for media laws aligned with Western interests across dozens of countries. Critics argue that such efforts amount to in- terference in sovereign nations' internal affairs. Russia designated RFE/RL as a "foreign agent" in 2020 and banned it out- right in 2022, accusing the outlet of disseminating false information re- garding the Ukraine conflict. This highlights how these media organizations are perceived not merely as neutral news providers but as instruments of U.S. soft power. Meanwhile, some observers accuse VOA and similar outlets of bias against countries like China and Russia, alleging they propagate divisive narratives designed to incite internal strife within targeted re- gions.
