Elisabeth Margue, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister, in charge of Media and Connectivity, has launched a public call for the granting of a concession for a non-Luxembourg radio service. The concession covers the following shortwave frequencies: 6140 kHz with a power of 1 KW, as well as the frequencies 9530, 15190 and 25850 kHz with a power of 100 watts. Radio Onda, a Brazilian radio station based in Brussels, has responded and is waiting for its license. The public call closed on October 18 at 6 pm. We are awaiting the opinion of the Independent Audiovisual Authority on the applications submitted. Then Minister Elisabeth Margue,in charge of Radiocommunications and Radio Spectrum Management, will issue the license. Radio Onda is a service published by ONDA ASBL, approved as a publisher by the CSA, the Belgian regulatory authority. Under European Union regula- tions, it can broadcast, subject to the agreement of local authorities, from all states in the European Economic Area, as was the case for RTL Belgium. Radio Onda would have liked to obtain a shortwave license in Belgium. Due to a legal vacuum, this has not yet been possible, even though it legally broadcasts on DAB+ in Brussels. In recent years,Radio Onda has been broad- casting on shortwave from the Netherlands, with a license granted by the National Inspectorate for Digital Infrastructure (RDI). The use of short- waves enables Radio Onda to extend its broadcasting area to Europe. Sub- ject to the granting of the license, the transmitters should be installed at Junglinster 49 43 08.7 N 06 15 51.9 E. Radio Onda, a non-profit asso- ciation, is currently raising funds for the purchase of a 1kW transmitter. All donations in money or material are welcome. Cycle of talks: Past, present and future of O.C. broadcasting. {translated Spanish to English, ed.} Next Wednesday, December 4 at 19:30 CEST / 18:30 UTC, the talk "Past, present and future of broadcasting in O.C." will be broadcasted on URE's YouTube channel, given by Antonio Buitrago, and you can follow it as usual at: <https://www.youtube.com/ureradio> The journalist Antonio Buitrago, has been director of Radio Exterior de Espana, host of the program 'Ondas de Ayer' on Radio 5 and is a National Radio Award. He has directed and presented the program 'Amigos de la onda corta', and is a member of the Spanish Association of Radio Listeners (AER). He therefore has extensive experience in the world of radio broadcasting, and in particular in shortwave broadcasting. Antonio re-launched shortwave at 'Radio Exterior de Espana' as a means of transmission to the outside world, and managed the expansion of its broadcasts to 8 hours a day. Therefore, listening to Antonio is a great opportunity to know first hand the ins and outs of these broadcasts, their history, the role played by the entities behind them, their current objective, which countries are the most interested in maintaining and promoting them, the reason for this, etc. This talk has seemed to us a good idea to close 2024, the year that marked the centenary of radio broadcasting in Spain, which was given the green light on June 14, 1924 in the B.O.E., a fact that officially constituted the birth of radio broadcasting in Spain and that allowed the establish- ment of the first radio stations in our country. As usual, at the end of the talk, Antonio will be available for your questions. We look forward to seeing you on December 4th. <https://aer.org.es/archivos/51810> (via Toni Morilla-ESP, AER 03 Dec 2024; via wor) TAIWAN {and non} Radio Taiwan International in French. A couple of questions about my post, if I may: 1. Did this time signal used to be called 'Rugby Clock' or something similar? 2. What does 'MSF' stand for? (Andrew Ross-UK, BrDXC-UK iogr news Nov 28) Re: MSF signal off-air for maintenance: Thursday 5 Dec. The MSF 60 kHz transmitter used to be at Rugby. It moved to Anthorn, Cumbria in April 2007. There's lots about it on Wikipedia <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_from_NPL_(MSF)> (Dave Kenny-UK, BrDXC-UK iogr news Nov 28) The transmitter was operated by the Post Office at Rugby for many years before moving to Cumbria. The M in the callsign is one of the prefixes allocated to the UK. The others are G and 2. All three are used by licens- ed amateur stations. I would guess that the SF stands for Standard Frequency. {later} I think I may have got two transmitters confused. The Rugby trans- mitter was GBR and operated on 16 kHz. There was a reserve tx at Anthorne in Cumbria on around 19 kHz. There were MSF transmissions on short-wave which my old WRTH handbook said were based at the Standards Laboratory at Teddington in Middlesex. I regularly received the 2.5MHz transmission on my EddystoneEC10 receiver back in the 1960s. There were also transmissions on higher HF frequencies, but I usually received WWV from the US on these. One of these gave the time in speech every 5 minutes. When I worked for the Post Office Telephones in the late 1960s, a 60 kHz pilot tone was distributed around the telephone network where carrier and coaxial cable systems were in use. It was used to synchronise the carrier frequencies used to assemble 4 kHz telephone channels into groups of 12 in the range 64-108 kHz. On coaxial systems many of these groups could be translated to higher frequencies and also combined with others to form supergroups. I'm not sure about the history of the 60kHz radio transmis- sion, but its source was probably the same as the Post Office pilot tone. (Ian Brooks, Verwood-UK, BrDXC-UK iogr news Nov 28) This got me thinking about devices in my home which update using radio time signals. I have 3 watches, the two Japanese ones use the German DCF77 ... 77.5 kHz signal. A Casio watch provides a choice and corrects using MSF 60 kHz but seems to receive better on DCF 77 ... 77.5 kHz. I have a German clock by Junghans which surprisingly relies on MSF. A Lidl kitchen clock uses DCF77 but never gets the summertime or wintertime change right. Here in Berkshire I think the German time signal is stronger. I have two internet ratios which derive the time from DAB data or the in- ternet. A smart watch health monitor gets its time from internet time ser- vers via Bluetooth. For my radio amateur operation I take the time from the GPS satellites with a dongle receiver updating the laptop. (Chris McWhinnie-UK, BrDXC-UK iogr news Nov 28) Re: MSF signal off-air for maintenance: Thursday 5 Dec. There is a timer server available for free download from Meinberger's (of DCF77 fame) <https://www.meinbergglobal.com/english/sw/ntp.htm> which keeps very precise time on your computer (win11 in my case). For amateur radio using the FT8 protocol stable computer time keeping by sender and receiver is needed. (Klaus Werner-UK G7RTI, BrDXC-UK iogr news Nov 28) USA 25000 kHz WWV Ft Collins. There was discussion on this list last month about the disappearance of the VOA web page with hourly newscasts. Instead, we now have "Worldwide in Five" "podcasts" on VOA's web site at <https://www.voanews.com/z/7982> which are nothing more than the VOA's top-of-the-hour newscasts. But they are only posted at four-hour intervals. And why is that ? It's because VOA is only creating a fresh newscast every four hours. Listening to the English stream this evening, I heard the identical news- cast at 2200, 2300, 0000, and 0100 UT. Finally, a fresh newscast aired at 0200 UT. - How very sad. If they don't change the beam at 1330 UT, should be fine listening for the sked En service. // 9840 kHz also good but not quite equaling the 25 mb signal.
