Suess-AUT, via BC-DX TopNews Oct 21) BELGIUM October 24, 2009, Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal (Radio Flanders International) ended its shortwave broadcasts. Belgian shortwave broadcasts date back to 1923: the "Bel Radio" station of the Regie des Telegraphes et des Telephones in Ruysselede broadcast news bulletins, in Morse code and phonics, to the Belgian Congo. Broadcasts be- came regular in 1934: a news bulletin in French and one in Dutch was broad- cast daily until the German invasion of 1940. During the war, the Belgian government in exile wanted to develop a broad- casting station in Leopoldville. The Americans offered 1 x 50 kW shortwave transmitter. This was the beginning of O.R.N.B.: the Office National Belge de Radiodiffusion, a subsidiary of the Belgian government in exile in London. After the war, two 50 kW transmitters in Leopoldville were used by the INR world service under the names "Belgium Calling The World" and "La voix de la Concorde". In 1952,"La voix de la Concorde" was repatriated to Brussels, broadcasting from the Wavre transmitter center. The new center has 2 Brown-Boveri 100kW transmitters and a 20 kW Telefunken transmitter. The network of antennas enables broadcasts to the Congo, Southern and Northern Europe, the Far East, the Americas and Asia. 1960: INR/NIR gives way to RTB/BRT. RTB/BRT is divided into 2 institutes: one French-speaking, the other Dutch-speaking. Technical services and worldwide broadcasts are attached to form a third institute: the Institut des Services Communs. 1969: World Broadcasting receives an additional transmitter from the RTT: a Thomson-CSF 50 kW Vapotron, and in 1972, two 250 kW transmitters are in- stalled to replace the 20 and 50 kW transmitters. 1977, following the federalisation of Belgium, RTB gave way to RTBF and BRT to VRT. On the global broadcasting front, "La Voix de l'Amitie" changes its name to "Radio 4 International" and "De Vriendschapbode" becomes "Radio Vlaan- deren Internationaal". 1992: RTBF ceased broadcasting and Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal used the 4 Wavre transmitters (2 x 100 kW and 2 x 250 kW), broadcasting in Dutch, French, Spanish, English and German. In 2001 Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal stopped using Wavre's shortwave transmitters. It was more attractive to rent airtime in other transmitter centers: among its subcontractors: Krasnodar 250 kW, Samara 200 kW and Petropavlovsk 250 kW in Russia; Rampisham 500 kW and Skelton 250 kW in Great Britain; Meyerton 250 kW in South Africa; Dhabayya 250 kW in the United Arab Emirates; Bonaire 250 kW in the Netherlands Antilles; Tashkent 100 kW in Uzbekistan and Juelich 100 kW in Germany. In 2009, shortwave broadcasts were stopped, and Radio Vlaanderen Inter- nationaal also shut down its medium-wave transmitter, which broadcast on 1512 kHz (600 kW) from Wolvertem. RVI broadcasts are now transmitted by the Wavre transmitter on 927 kHz. 2011 Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal goes out of business. The entire ser- vice is discontinued. (? Autoren: Ferdinand Hauser, Lubomir Smatana. (Radio RPI - CZ, Oct 23) DENMARK Anker Petersen (Denmark) of DSWCI, R.I.P. Thanks to Harald Kuhl through BrDXC.UK and DXplorer we learn that veteran DX'er Anker Petersen, one of the grand old men of the hobby, has passed away. Anker was active in European DX Council affairs for decades with the initial meetings to establish the organization being held at his home in Denmark. Anker was also one of the leading personalities of the Danish Shortwave Clubs International keeping numerous publications alive for radio hobbyists to continue to utilize after the club closed its doors several years ago. Rest in peace, Anker! (NASWA Journal, November 2024) I echo Ron's comments! Anker was a true friend to all DXers and DSWCI was truly a first class organization and one that all DXers trusted and relied on, especially for the latest tropical band DX. Unfortunately when you have been in this hobby as long as I have, all you can think about is all the great people you met and knew who have now passed on. Anker was a true friend and one of the giants in this hobby! He will be missed by many! (Bruce W. Churchill, Fallbrook, CA-USA, SW DXer Since 1952; wor Oct 23) Re: Anker Petersen (Denmark) of DSWCI, R.I.P. Is hard for me to think Anker is not with us now ! He was a wonderful friend for a good number of decades and I always enjoyed our correspon- dence. He was so productive with all the work he did for the Danish Short- wave Club International (my membership #2026). This year in March and May I sent him several emails, but had no reply, so I imagined something was up with him. I will always remember the great pictures he sent me during his memorable trip to Bhutan. Had pictures taken at the airport of some of the dignitaries arriving for the 16th SAARC Summit in 2010, held in Thimphu, Bhutan, which were very interest- ing. In 2012, BBS/Bhutan sent members to the Global Shortwave Coordination Con- ference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I couldn't understand their travel plans were via India, until Anker kindly provided the answer: "When I visited Bhutan last year, I learned that Bhutan still is a closed country which only allows that air traffic is done to or from Bhutan by Druk Air which only owns two passenger aircraft. They only fly to nearby airports like Delhi, Kathmandu and Kolkata, so it is very clear, that a flight to Kuala Lumpur has to change aircraft in Delhi." His deep love of SW will be missed! (Ron Howard-CA-USA, wor Oct 23) ANKER PETERSEN - FOND MEMORIES. Many wonderful memories through and with Anker over many decades of contact among radio DXers and their clubs worldwide from all continents: It was March of 1996, the cusp of spring, and the first signs of life were beginning to stir in Germany's countryside. My gracious host, Wolfgang, had meticulously planned a busy itinerary, but one event stood out—our re- union with Anker. We set off from Stuttgart to Frankfurt, and after a few days, made our way to the NATO air base in Ramstein near Kaiserslautern. Anker, with his usual warmth and dedication, drove all the way from Copenhagen just to meet us. After exchanging pleasantries, Anker, ever the generous soul, took us to a quaint Italian restaurant. The meal was delicious, but what made the evening truly unforgettable was the conversation—the shared stories and the way we reminisced about his passion for radio listening, as if no time had passed at all. Now, as I look back on that evening, it's not just the meal or the setting that lingers, but the company of a dear friend whose memory I hold close. Anker may no longer be with us, but that night remains one of those rare moments in life that I will forever treasure. (Sarath Weerakoon 4S5SL, Mt. Lavinia, Sri Lanka. Anker, one of the many Scandinavian top DXers and founders of the EDXC organisation decades ago, like Jens Frost, Olla Alm, Noel Green, Finn Krone and many others, especially expert on the tropical bands, a true friend to all DXers, DSWCI and EDXC members - has passed away on Oct 23, 2024. An African initiative? Not quite. His adviser, Jacques Foccart, the 'Mr Africa’ of Presidents de Gaulle and Pompidou, presented the project to him as ‘Bango speaks to the World’. Foccart's argument won over the mega- lomaniac president. It would be the most powerful transmitter centre in Africa ! 4 x Thomson - C.S.F. 500 kW short-wave transmitters powered by the Poubara power station and by a back-up power station built in the centre and con- sisting of 2 main groups and even a reserve group capable of developing 4,000 kW. 20 curtain antennas ensure all-round broadcasting. Cost of works: 3 billion CFA francs, planned duration: 30 months. The site is located in Moyabi in the south-east of the country, around 600 km from the Gabonese capital ( 01 40 34.4 S 13 17 58.0 E ). The national road #5 is even diverted to serve and admire the transmitter centre. It is linked by the hertzian beam that connects Libreville to Franceville. Programmes are to be transmitted from Libreville, and 2 stu- dios are to be set up in Libreville in the new regional centre of Radio- diffusion Television Gabonaise. A megalomaniac project that Gabon cannot afford. Was the President badly advised or did Foccart have another idea? In any case, the Saviour is coming. He did not come down from heaven, but from the rue Boujon in Paris ... It's SOFIRAD ! On 1 February 1981, Africa n degr1 took control and the 'La Voix de la re- novation'project was abandoned. It was replaced by Africa n degr1 la radio panafricaine, a semi-public company with capital of 100 mill. CFA francs, in which SOFIRAD was also a shareholder. This was a good deal for SOFIRAD, because for the first ten years, it was President Bongo's money that absorbed the losses. In 1991, the company finally broke even, partly thanks to advertising, but mainly thanks to the rental of transmitters. The main customer was R.F.I., which rented 1 Moyabi transmitter 22 hours a day. Other customers were S.S.R. (Switzerland) and N.H.K. (Japan). Over the years, all these stations have gradually stopped short-wave broadcast- ing and none of them rents Africa n degr1 transmitters any more. {...} 2002. SOFIRAD withdrew and the Paris branch was privatised. The facilities in Gabon were to be taken over by RFI in partnership with the Bolore group. {...} The Gabonese government had to find a new partner. Libya's Jamahirya Broadcasting came forward in 2006 and put $5 million on the table to take over SOFIRAD's shares. {...} L.J.B. took a majority stake in 2007. {...} The station is often forced into silence due to strikes or non-payment of its suppliers; In 2010, LJBC sold its stake to the Libya Africa Port- folio's Media and Publishing Company, an investment fund run by Muammar al-Gaddafi's chief of staff. {...} The planned investments never took place. The Moyabi transmitter centre was abandoned. Hidden behind tall grass, making the site almost unrecognisable. A sad fate for this radio station, which for many years was the most famous on the continent. (? Radiomagazine O/S ? - via Zacharias Liangas-GRC, via wor Oct 25) GERMANY Shortwave Radio hat ab 27. Volksinitiative erfolgreich - Liechtenstein muss oeffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk einstellen. I had last heard it on August 23; by next token English broadcast Aug 26, it was missing, and ever since. As usual it's the weakest at unfavorable angle for us, less than 15520 < 17715 < 17855 kHz, the last being S=9+30/40dB direct. BUT now there is another problem: it's Wednesday and there is NO ENGLISH !! 2200 UT keeps right on in Spanish about flora or fauna in Africa and Canarias. Could not catch program title but said something like "doble-L tres punto cero". Looked up later on websked, indeed "today" jueves 24 at 00:00 local time, it's "Doble Helice", a sci/tech show; followed by usual French as also heard. Looking ahead a few days, English is still shown for Sat 26 & Tue 29 at 00:00 UT, i.e. Fri 22 UT and Mon 23 UT ! So was this a one-off pre-emption, or what? Something's messed up in Madrid. And isn't it incredible that supposed "international" broadcasters make listeners abroad adjust to their own local clock changes, which should be irrelevant. REE's confusing B24 sked at HFCC: pretends everything is in Spanish! The possible frequencies M/W/F at 2300- 2300 UT when English is expected: ME 12030 kHz. AF 17755 or 21620 Khz. But that would require 5 transmitters at once: anticipating the first new one? Power for each as 200 kW. This is pretty remarkable: AWR got programming free of charge, then just decided to throw away this gift, no longer putting it on their podcast platform (completely unrelated to the use or non-use of whatever shortwave facilities), and had not even the decency to tell the donators? Indeed, shoddy. To some degree this could perhaps even be said about the treatment of their transmission providers. It appears that they have just been served cancellation notices in September, at a point when already frequency plannings for the B24 season existed, all worked out straight for the trash bin. What a bombshell this was in Vienna is sufficiently known, and I can add that even I have been asked "what does this mean for our Nauen transmissions ??", not leading to further enquiries only because shortly afterwards I heard back "Media Broadcast just confirmed our B24 slots". And thus I'm not so convinced that it was really a technical fault that brought the {SLBC Sri Lanka} Trincomalee transmissions to a premature end. In the meantime some attempts had been made to get more insight into the media activities of this church. With zero result, this is a bubble with no apparent connections to the outside world, besides their vendors of course. Adventist World Radio and Hope TV appear to be different entities, but with some hard to recognize connections. They are probably on their way out of radio, for the German language it was already done in 2018, leaving only podcasts and, first of all, TV, although the latter are apparently a bit too big shoes for them, as cheap-looking and long-winded studio productions, playing for airtime, reveal. Seems to me that they just shunned away from outright discarding the Guam station as own asset, thus did not go off shortwave completely. Note how they put on Arabic there, as only substitute for all the cancelled transmissions, while at the same time removing not only English but also Tibetan, Cambodian, Gujarati, Oriya, Hakka and Meitei. Whatever strategy this may be, if any. (Kai Ludwig-D, wor Oct 29) re What's going on with Wavescan, AWR; from Ray Robinson-USA: "Hi Glenn. We haven't communicated in some time, but I trust you are well. You may be interested in some of the fallout from AWR's decision to end the use of all shortwave relay sites. Jeff White and I were provided with the new schedule for KSDA about 10days or so ago, and the immediately obvious thing was that there were no English language programs on the schedule at all, including no Wavescan. We have sought clarification from a number of people at AWR, but have not re- ceived any response. No one at AWR has informed us that Wavescan has been canceled, but it seems that is their intention,at least in so far as their own platforms are concerned. Jose Jacob in India has confirmed that Wavescan was not broadcast via KSDA on Sunday, and furthermore this week's edition has not been posted on AWR's podcast page (Ray Robinson-CA-USA, wor Oct 28) USA In the most recent Flashsheet #1173 - Glenn Hauser wondered about Greenville's antennas aimed at 305 degr azimuth. The 305degr azi antennas are fixed log periodics, not typically used by VOA for long distance broadcasting, in fact I'm not sure if they use LPs any- where else. I surmise they're aimed at Cincinnati, Ohio to feed programm- ing to VOA's now retired Bethany station. The azimuth from Greenville "B" to Bethany is 306degr azi and the distance is 475 miles. In addition, ad- jacent to the log periodics there are three rhombics aimed at 285degr azi, which happen to split the azimuth between VOA's Dixon, CA and Delano, CA relay stations (also retired) as seen from Greenville NC. The Delano sta- tion was 2350 miles from Greenville "B" at 283degr azi and Dixon is 2450 miles at 288 degr azimuth. A dedicated microwave link from DC was built as a part of the original construction of Greenville and served to feed programs from the main studios in Washington to the receiver site known as Greenville "C". The Greenville facility was built in the early 60s, before widespread satel- lite distribution was available so I think it's reasonable to assume that those antennas were used to feed Bethany and Delano (and Dixon) on short- wave. I believe Greenville had some SSB utility transmitters in addition to their regular broadcast transmitters. BTW, Dixon appears to have a separate receiver site with four rhombics still standing aimed back toward Greenville at 78degr azimuth. The receive site is adjacent to Travis AFB at " 38 13 06 N 121 48 36 W ". I have no info if there was a receive site near Delano. (Jerry Lenamon-TX-USA, via NASWA Electronic Flashsheet #1175 Oct 27) Greenville was designed as two identical and independent transmitter sites – Site A and Site B. These two sites, near Bear Grass and Black Jack, NC, were fed by the receiving station – Site C – near Farville, NC. Technical advances forced the closure of the receiving site in 1995. In 2005, Site A began to be phased out. It is now mothballed, and only Site B remains on the air.
