Unless reception is poor on KiwiSDR's in Russia and the Middle East, I am not hearing Public Radio of Armenia on 1395 kHz from Gavar (Armenia) bet- ween 1600-1745 UT. IRIB Iran is dominant instead. Has PRA discontinued their MW broadcasts or is my monitoring just not picking them out? In the past there was a gap of 15 minutes on 1395 kHz between the end of the PRA broadcast at 1745 UT until the start of the NHK relay in Persian at 1800 UT, but surprisingly on both 8 and 9 October 2024 I noticed Radio Erena, the target broadcast to Eritrea, suddenly appear out of nowhere with strong reception from 1747 UT on the 8th and from 1757 UT on the 9th. It seems that the feed for Radio Erena (which is on shortwave 9585 kHz via Yerevan Gavar center between 1700-1800 UT) is kicking in on 1395 kHz as well. The Radio Erena broadcast ends at 1759 UT with a few seconds of the Encompass signature tune, before NHK starts as expected at 1800 UT, followed by filler music at 1820-1830 UT and AWR 360 in Arabic at 1830-2030 UT. I presume Encompass is the broker for both Radio Erena and the block bet- ween 1800-2030 UT on 1395 kHz, with their signature tune also being heard briefly at the end of the AWR 360 broadcast at 2029 UT. The question concerns besides 1395 kHz also 1548 kHz at SLBC site Trincomalee-Pekara Sri Lanka east coast, which in this case could soon close altogether. And something completely different: Indeed it is, and so there are two possibilities: Either 576 kHz now comes from the ex-1224 kHz antenna, a Kvadrat probably less suitable for low frequencies (although such an operation was probably for some time done at Grigoriopol) - or perhaps it comes from elsewhere now. (Kai Ludwig-D, wor Oct 11) Re Yerevan Gavar MW 1395 kHz of Oct 9, 11, 12). I don't know where this USSR-untypical mast antenna is located on the site in Gavar. On the satellite image in Google Earth from Oct 9,2023, I cannot recognize a single mast of this USSR atypical design. Nor do I see a typical red container there for feed and antenna adjustment. Unless you have from the Made in USA from 2006 Kintronics 6 masts one mast isolated and converted ? The converted LW 234 mast also has a typical roof capacity, like the 8x Sidefire masts in the direction of 232degrees Cyprus / Turkey / Lebanon / Jordan / Israel. G.E. and Maps shows the US production antenna from Kintronics, which was erected in February 2006, and payed from the USA. (wb df5sx, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 12) In any case, there have been tensions there for 20 years regarding TWR public relations work (around 2004-2007). Also, 15-20 years ago they tried to stop us from publishing of the MW / SW schedule via TWR Gavar towards NE ME and Central Asia from the detailed color printed brochure at that time. (wb df5sx, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 12) About superlong Zarya MW transmitting antennas, Armenia and Tajikistan. In our work at both Gavar Armenia and Orzu Tajikistan we inquired and the local folks had essentially no technical information on the Zarya anten- nas. They were set up and tuned by folks (from Moscow?) for specific fre-quencies and that's that. I can say that from my notes it is clear that retuning them would require moving a lot of shorted transmission line sections used for phase and amplitude control. And we have notes from a talk given to IBB personnel by a Russian engineer which state that the gain (presumably of the long version) is "40" which (if that is voltage) would be ~32 dB. I also have horizontal and vertical gain patterns for the 8 lambda and 10 lambda ver- sions taken by a colleague from photographing a document he was shown at Orzu, but that is the extent of my actual technical data. The drawings are so small that measuring them with a polar planimeter to obtain the gain would be subject to ambiguity. regards (ben (Ben Dawson, OR, Hatfield-Dawson Consulting Engineers); wor Oct 10) Re: About superlong Zarya MW transmitting antennas, Armenia and Tajikistan Re: 1395 kHz excellent log of Tony Rogers-UK BRDXC-UK iogr, wb_ed. I decided that I'd better start listening to AWR before they leave the air in B24 season (apart from Guam). At 05:00 UT 17790 kHz is very strong with Arabic programming (via MGLOB Talata Volonondry Madagascar relay facility), while 15560 kHz is at good level via Issoudun {sic, see below} in Hausa. RUV's long-wave broadcasting at Gufuskalar in Snaefellsnes has been discontinued. This is the end of long wave radio broadcasting in Iceland. Longwave broadcasts from Eid were suspended on February 27, 2023. Margret Magnusdottir - October 17, 2024 at 15:37 GMT. * All RUV radio broadcasts on long wave have been stopped. * RUV's safety broadcasts on the radio will go on the FM distribution * system. * The FM distribution system has been greatly tightened in recent years. * The long wave tower at Gufuskalar, which is the tallest structure in * Iceland, has been decommissioned. RUV's distribution system is an important link in the country's civil defense. The role of radio safety broadcasts is to ensure communication throughout the country and in the near future. Rasar 2's radio broadcast on FM has taken over RUV's safety radio broadcast. In recent years, the FM distribution system has been built up and a number of transmitters have been added in order to consolidate the system. Backup power stations have been installed at all large FM transmitters, and back- up power needs are solved for short periods of time with batteries or por- table power stations on the smaller ones. Transmitters have been placed on the highlands as well as large transmit- ters at key locations for seafarers. In places where the FM distribution system does not reach, other means of communication must be used, for example via satellite systems such as Starlink. Radio safety broadcasts have been on the airwaves for decades. During that time, a lot has changed in the technological environment. The biggest change is that very few people in the country now have a radio that re- ceives longwave transmissions. There is generally no long-wave reception in vehicles and has not been for a long time. The long-wave broadcasting system, not least the mast at Gufuskalar, is old and the reconstruction and other technical upgrades of this system are expensive. The long wave tower at Gufuskalar is the tallest structure in Iceland, 412 meters tall. It was built in 1963 for the British and American LORAN-C positioning system and was taken over by RUV's long-wave transmit- ter in 1997 year. via Mauno Ritola on MW-List io group 18 October. In 2014, an association of friends of the historic Radiostacja Babice was founded. Members organized local tours to revive memories of the station. In 2015, the Warsaw University of Technology made its first stratosphe- ric flight from Babice to investigate propagation conditions. In 2016 and 2021, there was an amateur radio station in memory of the station with the special call sign SN1923AXL, whose call sign referred to the first call sign of Radiostacja Babice. In 2020, the association announced plans for shortwave broadcasts and later looked for an engineer to refurbish an old transmitter. It was to reactivate the old call sign SPW Radio Warszawa, under which the Polish foreign radio broadcaster broadcast from Babice before the Second World War. A 10 kW transmitter with a suitable antenna system would cover most of Europe. They planned to broadcast one hour a week initially and gradually build up a group of cooperation partners. It was even considered that there would be cooperation with the foreign service of Polskie Radio. In 2020, the following frequencies were registered for the first time at the High Frequency Coordination Conference: 07:00-13:00: 7415 kHz (10 kW, nd) 07:00-10:00: 7430 kHz (10 kW, nd) (Dr. Hansjoerg Biener-D, via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Oct 18) Some more information on that location, ed.: Transatlantic transmitter station in Babice, Poland. Transatlantic Radio- telegraphic Headquarters (customarily the Babice Radio Station) - a high- ower radio station operating between 1923 and 1945, consisting of three sets of radiotelegraphic equipment: Transmitting Station - an installation in Stare Babice and in Warsaw, no- wadays at the junction of the commune of Stare Babice and the Warsaw di- stricts of Bemowo (areas of MSI Fort Radiowo and Las Bemowski) and Bielany (Radiowo) for intercontinental coverage. Area of the site: a strip 4 km long and 0.5-1.2 km wide. Number of antenna towers: 10. Type of towers: steel trusses, riveted. Height of towers: 126,5 m. Transmitters: 2 x 200 kW Alexanderson system (Made in USA). Manufacturer: Radio Corporation of America. Power supply: own power station with Diesel engine, with 500 kW generator. Number of antennas: 2 multi-tuned transmitters. In addition to the two independent antennas suspended from the towers, an additional ground was stretched underground. The buildings of the Broadcasting Station were destroyed and the technical equipment was cut up for scrap and taken away after 1945. In the woods to the north and south-west of the Boernerowo estate, there are surviving foundations of masts, coils, guard booths and ruins of technical buildings, as well as a belt of reinforced concrete anti-tank barriers (so-called hedgehogs) from World War II. Also surviving are blocks of flats for radio station staff, rebuilt around 2000. At Grodzisk, only the gatehouse building and the wooded area along the plot boundary have survived. The Babice Broadcasting Station had its twin, now preserved counterpart, the Varberg Radio Station in Grimeton, Sweden, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Autumn 1944 - incorporation of the radio station into the Warsaw forti- fication belt; installation of an armoured observation post on one of the masts. 16 January 1945 - blowing up of all the antenna towers in Babice by the Germans. After 1945 - opening of the transmitting and receiving station in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, operating until 1956 year. The OC remained past the TOH, didn't leave the channel clear until 02:12UT Under Tashkent-UZB, one can easily hear the AWR fanfare and announcing English as the next program, with Tashkent in Chinese dialect continuing until 2 minutes past the TOH (02:02 UT). Not a pleasant listen due to the clash. Also someone is sending CW intermittently on 15513 kHz, starting with 'VVV'. Perhaps my assertion that the off-channel transmitter was from Dushanbe is incorrect. Sometime before the BOH (I checked and it was 02:12 UT), that transmitter cut, so perhaps it was actually Tashkent-UZB all along. Still, the Dushanbe transmitter is VERY dirty with audible medium pitched whine, as well as a low frequency warble. Preaching until about 02:45 UT, and then music with a South Asian bent. NIST radio station WWVB is located near Fort Collins, Colorado-USA. Official Notice: Commencing from 0000 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on April 7, 2024, the southern antenna of WWVB has been rendered non-ope- rational due to damage sustained from wind gusts exceeding 90 MPH. Please be advised that WWVB continues to function at a diminished overall power, utilizing only its northern antenna. Update 11 October 2024: As of 10 October 2024, 2300 UTC, WWVB is operating at full power. NIST radio station WWVB is located on the same site as NIST HF radio sta- tion WWV near Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. The WWVB broadcasts are used by millions of people throughout North America to synchronize consumer elec- tronic products like wall clocks, clock radios and wristwatches. In addition, WWVB may be used in other consumer timekeeping applications, such as appliances, cameras, and irrigation controllers, as well as in high level applications such as accurate time synchronization. WWVB continuously broadcasts digital time codes on a 60 kHz carrier that may serve as a stable frequency reference traceable to the national stan- dard at NIST. The time codes are synchronized with the 60 kHz carrier and are broadcast continuously in two different formats at a rate of 1 bit per second using pulse width modulation (PWM) as well as phase modulation (PM). {...} as listed in the legacy WWVB time code format description and de- tailed in NIST Special Publication 432 (NIST Time and Frequency Services). Since October 29, 2012, NIST Radio Station WWVB has been broadcasting a phase modulated (PM) time code that has been added to the legacy AM/pulse- width-modulation signal. This enhancement to the broadcast provides signi- ficantly improved performance in new products that are designed to receive it. Existing radio-controlled clocks and watches are not affected by this enhancement and continue to work as before. {...} In the PM format, binary-phase-shift-keying (BPSK) modulation ... The data content, physical properties and scheduling features of this BPSK time code may be found here: Enhanced WWVB Broadcast Format (revised 2013-11-06). Note: disciplined oscillator products that track and lock to the 60 kHz WWVB carrier and were designed to work as frequency standards, will not work with the PM signal and have become obsolete. ... WWVB uses two identical antennas that were originally constructed in 1962, and refurbished in 1999. The north antenna was originally built for the WWVL 20 kHz broadcast (discontinued in 1972), and the south antenna was built for the WWVB 60 kHz broadcast. The antennas are spaced 857 m apart. Each antenna is a top loaded monopole consisting of four 122-m towers ar- ranged in a diamond shape. A system of cables, often called a capacitance hat or top hat, is suspended between the four towers. This top hat is electrically isolated from the towers, and is electrically connected to a downlead suspended from the center of the top hat. The downlead serves as the radiating element. North antenna coordinates: 40 degr 40' 51.3" N 105 degr 03' 00.0" W South antenna coordinates: 40 degr 40' 28.3" N 105 degr 02' 39.5" W Ideally, an efficient antenna system requires a radiating element that is at least one-quarter wavelength long. At 60 kHz, this becomes difficult. The wavelength is 5000 m, so a one-quarter wavelength antenna would be 1250 m tall, or about 10 times the height of the WWVB antenna towers. {...} Energy is fed from the transmitters to the helix houses using un- derground cables housed in two concrete trenches. Each trench is about 435 m long. A computer is used to automatically tune the antennas during icy and/or windy conditions. This automatic tuning provides a dynamic match between the transmitter and the antenna system. The computer looks for a phase dif- ference between voltage and current at the transmitter. If one is detect- ed, an error signal is sent to a 3-phase motor in the helix house that ro- tates the rotor inside the variometer. This retunes the antenna and resto- res the match between the antenna and transmitter. There are three transmitters at the WWVB site. Two are in constant opera- tion and one serves as a standby transmitter that is activated if one of the primary transmitters fail. Each transmitter consists of two identical power amplifiers which are combined to produce the greatly amplified sig- nal sent to the antenna. One transmitter delivering an amplified time code signal into the north antenna system, and one transmitter feeds the south antenna system. The time code is fed to a console where it passes through a control system and then is delivered to the transmitters. Using two transmitters and two antennas allows the station to be more ef- ficient. As mentioned earlier, the WWVB antennas are physically much smal- ler than one quarter wavelength. As the length of a vertical radiator be- comes shorter compared to wavelength, the efficiency of the antenna goes down. In other words,it requires more and more transmitter power to increase the effective radiated power. The north antenna system at WWVB has an effi- ciency of about 56.3%, and the south antenna has an efficiency of about 54%. However, the combined efficiency of the two antennas is about 68.8%. As a result, each transmitter has to produce a forward power of about 51kW to produce an effective radiated power of 70 kW. The frequency uncertainty of the WWVB signal as transmitted is less than 1 part in 1012. If the path delay is removed, WWVB can provide UTC with an uncertainty of about 100 microseconds. ... NIST builds and operates the country's most accurate atomic clocks, which help set the global time scale known as Coordinated Universal Time. Through its own time scale, NIST provides time to the nation and the world via the internet and radio. NIST develops chip-scale atomic clocks and calibrates clocks for customers such as stock exchanges. NIST researchers are working with international colleagues to redefine the second — the fundamental unit of time — using next-generation optical clocks. NIST has built a broad research program in time and frequency measurement. NIST scientists are using optical atomic clocks to push limits of accuracy and precision and test theories of fundamental physics; they are also building compact atomic and microfabricated optical devices for real-world applications. By controlling atoms with unprecedented precision, NIST re- searchers are advancing quantum computing, sensing and networking. NIST scientists are also developing state-of-the-art frequency sensors to measure greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and habitable planets outside of the solar system. Voice of Vietnam (VOV-5) on MW 1242 kHz has revised its schedule and is now heard at 1300-1600 (previously 1330-1630). I did notice this in July but forgot to check again until now. My ability to distinguish between South-East Asian languages isn't very good, but the revised schedule seems to be: 1300-1400 in Lao (ex-1330- 1430), 1400-1430 in Khmer (ex-1600-1630), 1430-1500 in Thai (no change) and 1500-1600 in Vietnamese (no change and as before is in // with 7220 kHz at this time). In the past this frequency had a far more extensive schedule; one example being around early 2010 when it was 1100-1130 in English, 1130-1200 in Thai, 1200-1230 in French, 1230-1300 in Khmer, 1300-1330 in French, 1330- 1430 in Lao, 1430-1500 in Indonesian, 1500-1530 in English, 1530-1630 in Vietnamese, 1630-1700 in English, 2200-2230 in Japanese and 2230-2300 in Chinese. It has been reduced over the years to just three hours now. Voice of Vietnam on 1242 kHz has been heard here in the British Isles oc- casionally during winter. Worth keeping an eye on this frequency in the weeks ahead if the conditions are suitable for Asian DX. Easy to identify them by their familiar signature tune between languages.
