Franz Bleeker reports ORS has demolished one antenna at the Moosbrunn site "A shortwave antenna operated by Austrian public radio company ORS was re- portedly blown up on Thursday (September 19, 2024). It is described as a "double-wall antenna" (Doppelwandantenne), and an article by NOe Press says that it was used for the Austrian public radio transmissions in German, on 6155 kHz {sic, partly true, ORS requested still 49mband trans- missions in B-24 season usage on 6155kHz too, ed.} . That would apparently mean that there haven't been such transmissions on Friday and Saturday, and that there won't be any on Monday (& ever after) - unless another an- tenna can and will be used for those transmissions (traditionally from 05:00 to 05:33 UT during summer and 06:00 to 06:33 during winter). That said, a Wikipedia article describes the double-wall antenna (it seems that there was only one of its kind in the place) as operating on the 13, 16, 19 and 25 meter bands. 6155 kHz equals a wavelength of 48.74 me- ters. Either way, this does not refer to the rotational antenna. That one appears to remain in place. The double-wall antenna's demolition hadn't been made public in advance, allegedly to avoid crowds of onlookers. At least locally, however, word seems to have spread, and it probably helped the assembly of pyro spotters that there was a delay in the action, as the installation of the explosi- ves took longer than scheduled. Monday morning, 05:00 UTC, will probably answer any open questions that there may be about the 6155 kHz transmissions. While the end of the regular morning news program on shortwave would spell a loss for listeners like me, especially to the highly informative "Morgenjournal", not everyone will be sad. There are residents in Moos- brunn, the neighboring parish, who had been waiting for a day like last Thursday for a decade. "Moosbrunner Nachrichten", a local paper published by Austria's main governing "Austrian People's Party", had reported in December 2014 that the shortwave transmission site as a whole would cease operating by 2020. That turned out as incorrect, and while one antenna is now gone, there are still some that may stay - at least for now. Unfortunately, the next demo- lition may not be announced either - be it out of fear of curious on- lookers, be it for saving the operator's public debate. But then, the stated reason for this week's demolition was the poor condition the anten- na wires had been in - an ORS representative is quoted as saying that repairs would have been too expensive. Thursday's demolition operation is shown here. Several hours reportedly passed between the demolition of the right-side and the left-side tower, between shortly past noon and in the afternoon. The applause (although scattered) seems to suggest that some Moosbrunners liked what they saw." (Alex Miatlikov-Dnipro-UKR, wor and via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Sept 21) I am saddened perhaps less by the demolition per se (although certainly sad enough) and more by what it says about the state of the current global conversation. Back in the day, ORF's global broadcasts in multiple langua- ges were a valuable, relatively neutral voice for news about Central and Eastern Europe. I listened in both English and German for many years. The German-only transmissions in recent years, while high quality, were not of the same global heft as it was no longer the intention of the for- mat to play that role but rather to be more of a broadcast for ex-pats. I fully realize that I am micturating into the ocean as I type this, but most countries, when they leave shortwave, abandon also the intention to make a serious effort to reach out directly to the citizenry of other countries on the same level as before. This trend helps lead us toward greater barbarism on a human level even as our technology advances - not a good combination at all. (Bill Tilford-Chicago-USA, wor and via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Sept 21) AUSTRIA Oesterreichischer Rundfunk Vienna, ORS Moosbrunn shortwave curtain antenna blown up recently. The reason why the 300 kW double-wall antenna, which is a proud 60 meters high, was demolished due to the poor condition of the entire installation. Re: Austria's ORS demolishes SW antenna used for 6155 kHz. Sorry, but the report of NOeN is full of mistakes. "Only" the old curtain antenna for the 300 kW transmitter has been demo- lished. The direction of transmission with that antenna could be either 85 degr or 265 degr (South East Asia, Australia and the northern part of the South American continent). The frequency range covered the 25, 19, 16 and 13 m bands. The LogPer and the quadrant antenna are still in Moosbrunn near Vienna in place. The 6155 kHz OE1 and R. DARC programs can therefore continue to be transmitted. And is has been still transmitted in this morning. On Wednesday 11 September, the Monegasque Sovereign visited Roumoules, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region, to commemorate the 50th anniver- sary of Radio Monte Carlo's transmitter centre, a symbol of the historic links between Monaco and the town. Prince Albert II attended the ceremony to mark the half-century anniver- sary of the Radio Monte Carlo (RMC) transmitter centre, inaugurated in 1974. Welcomed by the local authorities, including the Prefect of Alpes- de-Haute-Provence, Marc Chappuis, and the Mayor of Roumoules, Gilles Megis, the Sovereign unveiled a commemorative plaque at the site. At the transmitter centre itself, the Prince was also greeted by Claude Cottalorda and Jean-Charles Allavena, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of Monaco Media Diffusion respectively, the company responsible for manag- ing the airwaves beamed out from the strategic location. Built in 1974 at the behest of Lucien Allavena, Radio Monte Carlo's technical director at the time, the Roumoules transmitter centre played a pivotal role in expanding RMC's audience to France and Italy. Thanks to the facility, Monegasque radio was able to reach a much wider audience, strengthening its influence on European radio waves. In addition to the radio-related event, the Prince's visit rekindled the historical links between Roumoules and the Monegasque dynasty. The barony of Roumoules belonged to the Grimaldi-Regusse family in the 17th century. To celebrate their shared heritage, the Prince unveiled a sign at the en- trance to the village, indicating that Roumoules belongs to the network of "Grimaldi of Monaco Historic Sites". Another official ceremony took place near the town hall, where a plaque was installed to commemorate the unique event. The day ended with a public ceremony in the Place de la Republique, with Prince Albert II receiving honorary citizenship of Roumoules, reinforcing the historical and symbolic ties between the Provencal municipality and the Principality. 'They,' in this case, refers to the 120 local Christians who spent 2 years planning and praying for the project, the elderly woman who donated her land for the site, the men who helped build it, the women who cooked for the workers, and the countless volunteers who produce the programs and keep the station running." In 1945 two young men from Southern California established a missionary radio station that would later become Far East Broadcasting Company(FEBC). They had only one goal in mind: broadcasting Christ to the World. At first they focused on sharing Christ with the people of China. At that time China had developed mass production of the AM radios for listening to the communist propaganda. So, their very first broadcast was from Shanghai on the MW. But by 1948 all mission work in Red China was shut down due to Communism. An alternative had to be found. About a few hectares of property were pur- chased for the transmitting site in the Philippines near Manila, in Venezuela City: 14 41 16 N 120 58 50 E {it's VALENZUELA in Philippines gh-ok-usa} Their first station DZAS was the AM one on 680 kHz with effective radiated power of 15 kW. A 300 foot vertical tower was completed in the fall of 1950 year. In 1953 the DZAS station broadcast for 19 hours a day in 34 languages and dialects to 25 countries. Programs were of public interest in welfare: music, education, first aid, hygiene, agriculture, news and Bible studies. After the AM station started to work the FEBC began to build their short- wave stations on the compound, which they called CRCM - Christian Radio City Manila. In the 1950's the SW stations required the separate antenna arrays for each meter band. By 1952 a number of the SW stations appeared on the CRCM: DZB2, DZH6, DZH7, DZH8, DZH9. Later the DZI8, DZI9, DZF2 and DZF3 were added. In 1963 each station had its own frequency : DZB2 - 3345 kHz; DZI6 - 17810 / 17805 kHz ; DZH6 - 6130 kHz ; DZI8 - 21515 kHz ; DZH7 - 9715 kHz ; DZI9 - 7230 / 7240 kHz ; DZH8 - 11850 / 11855 kHz ; DZF2 - 11920 kHz ; DZH9 - 15300 kHz ; DZF3 - 15385 kHz. All shortwave transmitters had an output power of 2,5 kW, but with a power gain of the antenna systems their effective radiated power was usually over 10 kW up to 15 kW. (lev.lyt shortwavesites, Sept 5, 2024, via gh ok-usa via wor Sept 10) The early history of the FEBC Part II. When the FEBC,being well equipped with specially beamed antennas, it could carry their programs into the farthest corners of the World - to China and Russia,to Japan and Indonesia and to all countries in between, even to the United States and Europe. But its main aim, however, was to spread Christianity to Asia ! To reach hundreds of thousands of people in the areas where there were no radios or electricity, the FEBC sent them the "portable missionaries" - battery operated, pretuned receiving sets. China used about 25 SW transmitters to jam the FEBC broadcast ! Quite soon the FEBC realized that their transmitting site in Valenzuela was technically outdated and they started to build two new SW stations in Bocaue (Bulacan) and in Iba (Zambales) with advanced antenna systems and modern powerful transmitters. As the FEBC wrote: "The CRCM facility could no longer accommodate the pro- liferation of the transmitters and antennas for the growing overseas schedules, the Bocaue property was purchased and its development began in 1957 year". Gradually more and more of the SW stations in the CRCM site ceased their transmissions and more programs went to the new SW sites. In 1983 only one station DZH6 was working from CRCM on 6030 kHz. Later in 1986 Jerome S. Berg-MA-USA wrote:" "FEBC transmitted on SW from three stations: Iba, 100 kW; Bocaue 2/10/50kW and Baco for local coverage". Not any information was found about SW station in Baco. The CRCM compound in Valenzuela existed until the end of the 1990's and then was sold in exchange for making a Valenzuela City Park. Now in the park people can visit a MiniMuseum of the long history of FEBC. There is the podium on the roof on which sits the topmost section of the former 702 DZAS antenna. The podium is situated where the guardhouse was at the gate of the former CRCM site. Ukrainian Radio's broadcasts were used for a dual purpose. The music that was broadcast was like a bearing (the angle between the direction from the observer to any object and the meridian — ed. note ) for the Soviet long- ange aviation pilots who flew at night to bomb the enemy's rear. Focusing on the music on the air, the navigator laid the plane's route, and there- fore, even during the bombings, the transmission could not stop. ... Call signs of Ukrainian Radio ... Radio station named after Taras Shevchenko, which left Kyiv, spoke from Saratov on medium waves. In 1943, the radio station "Dnipro" was created, mounted in the carriages of a railway train. The team consisted of Ukrai- nian journalists and writers. The radio station "Dnipro", which went on the air on May 2, 1943, is interesting for us because it was the first time that the callsigns of the Ukrainian Radio - "The Dnieper is wide roaring and moaning" sounded on its air. Semyon Kushnirenko was the initiator of these call signs. After the war, he was the head of the Poltava Regional Radio. This melody later became the callsigns of all Ukrainian radio stations. After hearing them from the radio receiver, the listeners know for sure - on the air of Ukrainian Radio. The two words "Ukrainian Radio" are the official callsigns, but Danylo Kryzhanivskyi's music to Taras Shevchenko's words "Roars and moans the Dnieper is wide" has remained unchanged musical callsigns for more than 80 years. The author of the music lived only 37 years. Danylo Kryzhanivskyi was a music teacher in Bolgrad, Odesa region, and a choral composer. He dedi- cated his piece to Mark Kropyvnytskyi when he came with the theater on tour to Odesa. The conductor liked the song so much that it was performed after the performance - the audience listened standing. Currently, this melody sounds on the air of Ukrainian Radio before the beginning of each new hour - 24 times a day. Over time, its arrangement changed, but the me- lody remained the same. For visitors to the Museum of Ukrainian Radio, I will listen to different versions of the callsigns. July 2024 was the centenary of the BBC broadcasting on longwave, so I'm bringing this series on the 100-year history up to the present day. Part 6 (in July 2024 'Communication') took the story to 1997, with side excursions on related topics. In 1997, the BBC sold all its domestic transmitting stations in the UK, including those responsible for longwave, to a US company, Castle Tower. The BBC said it did this to raise funds for the start of digital broad- casting. The BBC contracted Castle Tower to transmit BBC services. (The BBC's external transmitting stations in the UK were sold to Merlin Communications.) Shortly after the sale, Castle Tower merged with another US firm, Crown Communications, with the new company known as Crown Castle International. In 2004, Crown Castle UK was sold to National Grid plc, the name changing the following year to National Grid Wireless. In 2007, National Grid Wireless was bought by Arqiva, a subsidiary of the Australian conglomerate Macquarie. In summary, the BBC's longwave transmitters have been owned by: 1924-1925: Marconi 1925-1926: British Broadcasting Company 1927-1997: British Broadcasting Corporation 1997-2004: Castle Tower / Crown Castle 2004-2007: National Grid / National Grid Wireless Since 2007: Arqiva Despite the changes of ownership, the longwave signals on 198 kHz (1515 metres) continued to come from 3 sites: 1. Droitwich (south of Birmingham): Two Marconi B6042 transmitters, each of 250kW, installed in 1987. Their outputs can be combined to give a total power of 500kW. 2. Burghead (east of Inverness): Two Marconi 6046 transmitters, each of 28 kW (modified versions of the Marconi 6034), installed in 1988. Their outputs can be combined to give a total power of 50 kW. 3. Westerglen (just outside Falkirk): The same arrangements as at Burghead. Westerglen when it went into service in June 1932. There is also a fourth, rather special, transmitter carrying the BBC on LW. This is at the Dartford Crossing, where several micro-power rigs have carried popular AM/FM stations in both northbound tunnels since late 1980s. They can also be used to carry emergency information. [has anyone heard the LW 198kHz relay in the Dartford tunnel? Does anybody have a LW car radio who can drive through the tunnel and check? The relay is not listed by Ofcom or on the mb21 transmitter site Also in 1997, it was reported that the UK radio regulator (then known as the Radio Authority) might advertise a commercial licence for longwave broadcasting in the UK (on 225 kHz). This would be a fourth national station (INR4). The idea came to nothing: At the very end of the 1990s, there was a plan to broadcast a commercial station, MusicMann, from a longwave transmitter on 279 kHz in the Isle of Man [and then on a structure in Ramsey Bay]. This also came to nothing. Meanwhile, the BBC's use of longwave has remained very stable since the transmitter privatisation of 1997. As has been the case since the late 1980s, the transmitters are on air 24/7 hrs/d, carrying BBC World Service during the overnight gap in Radio 4's schedule. Since 1991, the main Radio 4 service has been carried on FM, with longwave being used for opt-outs of minority-interest programming. All opt-outs on longwave ended on 31 March 2024 and 198 kHz now carries exactly the same output as R4's FM network. Andy Walmsley tweeted on 31st March 2024 at "Another bit of radio history just happened. At 12 noon on @BBCRadio4 the last ever long wave only #ShippingForecast. It's been broadcast on LW since Sunday 22 April 1956 in the days of the Light Programme. Announcer was Ron Brown". Hear it at: Left: Radio Times, Friday 21 October 1983 - three of the four Shipping Forecasts were on Long Wave only (then still on 200 kHz until 1988 year). Since 1st April 2024, shipping forecasts are broadcast twice daily on Radio 4 at 00:48 and 05:20 LT, plus on Saturdays and Sundays at 17:54 LT. The radio teleswitching service (RTS) - (see July 2024 'Communication') - has continued as a service for the electricity industry. Indeed, for some years now the industry has ensured the continuation of the LW service by subsidising it. Repeated suggestions have been made over the years that the RTS service - and therefore the longwave radio broadcasts - would close, only for a reprieve to be announced. But in May 2024, it was confirmed that the service would close in June 2025. Here we pause this series on the BBC on Long Wave for now - many thanks to Chris Greenway for compiling it.
