SEOUL, Aug. 29 (Yonhap) South Korea plans to expand its support for civic groups' radio broadcasts targeting North Korean residents in a bid to help North Koreans access external information, the unification ministry said Thursday. The government plans to increase its support for the production of content and the training of personnel for radio broadcasts in the private sector as part of a new unification blueprint. The initiative is one of seven key measures outlined by President Yoon Suk Yeol during his Liberation Day speech on Aug. 15 to promote a greater in- flow of outside information and culture to North Korean residents. As a result, government subsidies for private organizations that conduct radio broadcasts targeting North Korean residents are expected to increase significantly next year. However, the ministry did not specify the amount of funding. In recent years, North Korea has been stepping up surveillance and punish- ment of its people by implementing three so-called evil laws to prevent North Koreans from accessing outside information. One of the laws calls for punishing those who bring in outside culture and information with 10 years of hard labour. Punishment is tougher in the case of those watching and distributing South Korean films and music, with some cases of execution. In addition, a number of networks have switched channels, been temporarily off air or newly put on air.The new licences, valid since 1 September, enable local radio over DAB+ across the country. For this purpose, the National Digital Infrastructure Inspectorate distri- buted licences to both public and commercial parties in recent months. Through 57 allotments (networks), the whole country can be covered. The number of new networks launched is still limited. This is due to se- veral things. First, licences for commercial stations were granted only last month. In addition, all licence holders must enter into a cooperation agreement for the rollout and operation of the networks. King wrote the letter in the margins of a newspaper on April 16, 1963, and it is addressed to the clergy, but also to the nation. The quote is often used to highlight the lack of socio-eco- nomic and/or political justice, and it demonstrates how different parts of society are connected. Radio and TV Noordzee was founded in 1963 with land-based offices and broadcast from the sea. The artificial island was built in the harbour of Cork, Ireland. It was towed to its location and anchored in cement on the seabed. On 12 August 1964, a test broadcast was performed and on 15 August regular broadcasting started. The radio service broadcast on 1400 kHz, while on television it used Channel E11 While Dutch authorities were unhappy with the broadcasts, they did not possess the legal right to stop them. However, on the 12 of December, 1964 the government passed the REM law, which split the North Sea into conti- nental sections. The sea bed under REM Island, to which the structure was attached, was therefore declared Dutch territory. Five days later, Netherlands Marine Corps boarded the platform and ended broadcasting. I remember the story made the UK headlines; the front page of the Evening News in London had various photos including the troops abseiling from helicopters. Note - no connection with Radio Northsea International which broadcast from the Mebo 2 in the early 1970s. This email is intended as an update of where we are at present. We are still primarily continuing with our 'Plan A', with 3801 signatures so far on the petition for the BBC to keep Radio 4 Longwave. Meanwhile, Plan B -to keep longwave broadcasts even without the BBC - con- tinues to develop as a backup option in the event that the BBC decides to pull the plug. There are some in the local council that would like to see the Droitwich masts listed, which would save them from demolition. This month, we expect the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) to discuss pro- posals for them to support longwave broadcasts with their expertise and help. We are also trying to contact Arqiva to get them on-board for a plan that could see amateur broadcasts made using Droitwich, but responses from them are not yet forthcoming. I'll try to keep you updated on this. Please let me know if you have any advice or contacts that might help with this. This Friday 6th September is the 90th Anniversary of the Droitwich trans- mitter, so look out for a new article celebrating the anniversary on the website in the coming days. It's also a good opportunity to spread the word about the campaign. And do of course tune into Droitwich if you can ! By Derek Wiley. Published: August 30, 2024. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, especially when it comes to the rapidly- evolving world of tech. If you’d like to take a wild stroll down memory lane, I urge you to pay a visit to RadioShack Catalogues, where a dedicat- ed team has carefully created a digital archive spanning over 70 years of the electronics retailer’s publications. The 1988 Radio Shack main catalogue. "The heart of this online archive lay in its collection of catalogues, spanning the years 1939 to 2011," reads the site's main page. "For 72 years, RadioShack had meticulously crafted these catalogues, show- casing a diverse range of products that mirrored the evolving landscape of technology. From hi-fidelity stereos to communication equipment, from computers to electronic components, these catalogues are a visual journey through the history of RadioShack." Both main catalogues and computer catalogues, as well as miscellaneous items and historical information, are available to peruse for free as glo- rious full-colour scans. This extensive effort has been created as a labour of love, and is certainly worth a visit. "In a world where technology continues to advance, this digital reposi- tory ensures that the memories, products, and innovations of RadioShack will forever be accessible to those who wish to reminisce and appreciate the enduring impact of this iconic retailer." _Radio World_ (ARDXC ADXN magazine #683, Sept 2024, page #9, wor and direct Sept 7) USA/BOTSWANA Here's my report to VOA Grimesland: "To: "Hello Mr Dail, I'm listening to your DRM test around 6090 kHz. VG reception of music only, no announcements or IDs heard but the dis- play showed Murrow Station, Greenville-NC-USA, and QSL requests to you. Several songs followed with pauses, none in Spanish. I could not name most of them until 0116 Beatles' Hard Days Night, but stopped at 0118 UT for transmitted silence, 0119 a variety of strange sounds as some other song attempted. More of that at 0122 UT as I am about to dispatch this. I see that the drmrx schedule shows R. Marti 24 hours. This is the first time I've run across tests on 6090 kHz. What are the actual transmission hours ? Does this really have anything to do with Marti? Are you going to put that programming on it? Wonder if you will try Journaline? I copied some of the parameters off the display, which no doubt match what you are sending out. SNR varying 13.0 up to 15.5 dB. xHE_AAC (1001) DRM Test Tx EEP Audio 9.76 kbps. I would be interested to know which GB# transmitter this is, what brand, and what else it may be used for in AM. Are there any active DRM tests on other frequencies? I would also like to know the power for this and antenna azimuth. I would appreciate QSL as offered. If card available, my postal address is: Glenn Hauser, P.O.Box 1684, Enid OK 73702, USA NoAM. "This is a classic Washington effort to avoid public reaction," writes Daniel Robinson in this letter to the editor. In this letter to the editor, the author comments on the story "VOA Is Shuttering Its Marianas Shortwave Site" and the subsequent letter "Keep the Marianas Shortwave Site and Shutter the 'Worthless' Services." Radio World welcomes letters to the editor on this or any story. Email The letter from Lawrence Cohen of Utica regarding the U.S. Agency for Global Media's closure of the Marianas site(s) reflects the frustration of many taxpaying Americans over decisions made by USAGM. News of closures of the sites in the Pacific and at Sao Tome in West Africa was leaked from sources within the agency long before the puzzling story that appeared quoting a statement by William Martin; but which the VOA PR office in a response to me later described as an email that was "shared on background, not for attribution." VOA further stated in response to my media inquiry that USAGM did not issue a press release on June 26 "or in the past few days" and asserted that the story of the closure was "USAGM news." So, via anonymous sources we knew for weeks about the closure, but neither VOA nor USAGM issued any public statement. So, the closure of a major relay station was "USAGM news" but the agency never publicly acknowledged it with a press release, nor did VOA. Appa- rently, Radio Free Asia also did not issue any press release. This is a classic Washington effort to avoid public reaction, whether by U.S. taxpayers or from USAGM/VOA viewers/users, and it's a familiar story to those of us who have followed the agency's blunders in recent years, and carried out investigative reporting on them. As one person commented on a radio-related discussion group,it seems "that an internal e-mail [was sent] to the public [to] inform the greater public about the closure." The letter from Lawrence Cohen raises the question of whether the agency could have avoided the closure by shutting down the Office of Cuba Broad- casting (OCB/Radio-TV Marti), thus maintaining a site that is more impor- tant given the increasing tensions with China in the region. That makes sense, but appears not to take account of the fact that it is difficult, if not impossible, to shutter any government agency once it has been given life; and the fact that OCB has stranglehold support in the U.S.Congress where lawmakers — especially those from Florida — would never support closing R/TV Marti because they would lose support from consti- tuents. Meanwhile, as detailed in an internal email, while the agency struggles with budget problems, the VOA director Mike Abramowitz, along with the USAGM CEO Amanda Bennett, authorized even more money for salaries of top agency managers, bringing a storm of questions from rank and file em- ployees who are quite frustrated with senior level executives, who already receive bonuses, raking in even more money.
